Everlasting Covenant of Salt?

In Numbers 18:19 and II Chronicles 13:5, God made an everlasting covenant of salt with Aaron and his sons, and with David and his descendants.

What is the significance of salt in these covenants? I know salt was a preservative, but was there any other reasons for making it a covenant of salt?
