Favorite Comedic Actors

Who are some of your favorite comedic actors? At this point I'm not dealing with stand-up comedians.

I think Jerry Van Dyke has got to be one of the funniest. Have you ever seen his Mule Train act? Man, that's hilarious.

Jerry is six years younger than his brother Dick, but looks ten years older.

It's no wonder Harvey Korman would break up so easily at Tim Conway's antics. He had me in stiches so many times.

Tommy Smothers and his brother were wonderful. But Tommy was a standout.

W.C. Fields was a gem. I can't get enough of his comedies.

Stan Laurel. At his funeral Buster Keaton said "Chaplin wasn't the funniest, I wasn't the funniest, this man was the funniest."

Jerry Lewis was hilarious. He got even better after breaking away from Dean Martin, but lost his touch on his later years it seems, as his last one or two movies weren't that funny.

The duo of Abbott and Costello was another good comedy team. I'm sure everyone in this board could recite "Who's on first?".

I grew out of the three stooges as a teenager. To me, slapstick comedy just wasn't funny.

Someone that definitely needs to be mentioned in the thread, though, is Red Skelton. Some of his pantomimes became legendary.

You're right. I don't know how I missed listing him. He was just a naturally funny person. His laughter was contagious.

Don Knotts is another one I missed. His Deputy Barney Fife character was so very, very funny. "Just nip it. Nip it in the bud."

How could I have neglected John Candy? He was a class act.

And I forgot to mention Steve Martin --he is a wonder to behold. I love his physical comedy. Martin is a very intelligent person to boot.

Robin Williams, when not in his vulger mode, thought that he was the funniest obe ever when he stayed "clean"

Lucille Ball. Even the movies she did early in her career showed her comedic side. And believe it or not, Frank Sinatra was funny in those detective movies he did in the 1960's.

Peter Sellers was a comedic genius! His Pink Panther movies were excellent as was his performence in Dr. Strangelove where he played several charactors. All the others you mentioned were great too.

Don Knotts had a unique humor. I want a fan of Barney Fife so much as the characters he did in "Ghost and Mr Chicken", "Apple Dumpling Gang" and "Shakiest Gun in the West".

Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean) has another character, Johnny English, that is just as hilarious as Mr Bean. This character is much like Inspector Clouseau from Pink Panther.

Which leads me to agree with the Steve Martin mention. His reimagining of Inspector Clouseau was genius. His earlier work on SNL was funny, as was his work alongside Chevy Chase and Martin Short in "The Three Amigos".

I want too fond of Benny Hinn, but to be fair, I'm not too familiar with his work.

One thing I am thankful for is that I was brought up on the"Old Comedians" from the generation prior to mine. Back when comedy was genuinely funny rather than relying on pushing the envelope and "shock factor" to be funny.

Loved to watch Abbott and Costello movies. Saw re-runs on TV. Made for a wonderful breakfast on the weekend.
Bob Hope was really great too. His specials were always worth watching.

Grew up with I love Lucy. That theme song will never leave my memory! All of the characters were outstanding.

Please consider Cary Grant. His bread and butter was as a leading man, but his comedies are priceless: "Operation Petticoat," "Father Goose," "My Girl Friday," "Bringing up Baby," "The Philadelphia Story."

He was such a good comedic actor because he was playing against type.

Let's not forget Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Burnett.

I have seen only a fraction of Steve Martin movies. My favorite was Planes, Trains and Automobiles. It's such a classic, and John Candy's partnership with Martin made it so.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels makes me laugh so much I can hardly take it.

The Lonely Guy is memorable --I have memorized some of the scenes.

The Jerk was an early favorite of mine.

My Blue Heaven he nailed it. Very well done.

I used to watch Steve Martin way back in the late 60s when he guested on the old Steve Allen daytime show.

"Being There" is one of my favorites. And Monty Python has to be on the list (and John Cleese).

I guess Bob Newhart is probably my favorite comedian.
