Favorite Golden Oldies

I don't expect you will be familiar with most of mine, but I like anything by Vera Lynn, and especially When the Lights Go On Again. Then I get a chuckle all the time with George Formby music, and Leaning on the Lamppost at the corner of the street, in case a certain little lady passes by......some of his songs are quite naughty, but wot Brits songs are not on the naughty side?
It is hard to better the music of David Whitfield and My Son John or even Cara Mia.

Someone mentioned Petula Clark. She was very popular during the war years when she entertained the troops. Many on this side of the pond fail to understand her recording of Downtown..they can't relate it to London and miss what it is about. Love that song too.

Was it ever determined who won the falsetto war between the Surfer Sound, e.g. "Surfers Rule" ['Four Seasons ya' better believe it....':tongue3: ] and Franky Valli's group?

 

I loved Jesus Rodrigueiz "Cold Fact", the Velvet Underground with Nicco, Popul Vu, the Doors.

My first album was "Hot August Night" that cost a whole $11.00 (it was a double record).

Books include the" Billabong" series by Mary Grant Bruce, Enid Blyton's Faraway Tree series, JRR Tolkien, and the early books by Michael Moorcock. Also a radio series in print about Tuckonie and the Magic Boomerang from my mother's era.

i listened to radiogram programmes for the kiddies, nothing much on television because only dad really watched the news in good old black and white. Later on in the 1970s there was Division 4, Tobor the robot (of course), Dr Who, Star Trek (I loved that show), Rush,Felix the Cat, and Weekend Magazine and Peach Tonight.

This thread is mostly about music and such, but a wonderful memory of my childhood when going to school with my weekly sixpence was choosing

aniseed balls
licorice straps about a mile long
all day suckers
and other boiled lollies
redskins
jubes


all in huge glass bottles at kid eye level and getting them in a paper bag. Always bought the sweeties that were 4 a penny type. One school had a treat for the really hot summer days (twice one year) were the kids all got iceblocks courtesy of the priest next door ( a good old stick who had to discipline the boys if necessary as the 2 old nuns were not up to it):wavey:
