I did. No one said it was "fine."

Actually, I suggested that Christians exercise grace... not "let this slip by." And it has obviously not "slipped by" since it has generated discussion.

And regarding the handwringing about "the children" being harmed before they go to school, I knew all the bad words by the time I was in 3rd grade even though no one in my family ever used them. You're living in a fantasy world if you believe that children don't hear bad language (or worse, condemning soul-crushing language) on a fairly regular basis.

Growing up in a Baptist church, I believe that I was more damaged by the soul-crushing attitudes and speech of a number of my Sunday School teachers, as well as the implicit and explicit racism and racial slurs I heard on a regular basis from "Christians", than I was hearing and using coarse language I picked up in elementary school.

That's not to say that coarse language is a good thing, but it is much farther down the list of concerns than the rush to judgment I see in the Christian community. We should be looking for a way to redeem this situation, not merely condemning it.

Sure, but Christians should be willing to do more than non-Christians to redeem the situation. Instead of angry letters to the FCC demanding punishment, why not grace-filled letters to CBS and Diane Keaton to let them know of your concerns and promise them your support and prayer?

    Same story, different chapter.

Being dismissive on the subject is a good as accepting it.

We can't redeem the situation. They can pay the fine and put the program on a delay. Like it should have been in the first place. The FCC should punish them.

I don't see many Christians saying that we should send letters to Howard Stern forgiving him and how we will pray for him. This situation isn't any different.

A fine and put the program on a delay.

This thread is cracking me up.

Get over the fact that a mistake was made. This was no conspiracy. As if the people behind the scenes are secretly trying to infiltrate the f-word into our lives.

    Wait a minute....maybe it's true?

Dismissive? Nope. Wanting to exercise grace? Yes.

Why not? You don't have to have power over something to redeem it.

We should. If he received grace from Christians instead of condemnation, he might be open to God's grace.

God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world... He sent Him to save it. If we are followers of Jesus, carrying on His mission, we don't have the right to condemn.

The earthly life of Jesus expressed redemption and restoration. Like Jesus, we should focus on the people involved here and how we can give them what they need to see the character of God expressed in their lives.

Jesus didn't use political power to change institutions or get people to conform to His will. He used the force of grace and redemption, under the empowerment and guidance of the Spirit, to draw people to Himself.

In this circumstance, we are within our rights as citizens to exercise political power to get people to conform to our collective will. But wouldn't it be better to act in a better way, a Christian way, to redeem this situation through the extension of grace and a carefully worded letter of concern and support?

So students, today we see a fine example of the fallacious argument commonly known as the Slippery Slope fallacy!

"You know, we start off by teaching kids to read the bible and the next thing you know, they are reading porn magazines and terrorist manuals. Best to leave them illiterate."

It can be a slippery slope. Some countries already have nudity in their commercials.

I've never been in another country, but we watched a show about funniest commercials from around the world, and soem of them had full frontal nudity (blacked out in this country of course).

None of what you have said so far has given you any excuse for what you're asking.

    1. You have yet to admit that the network did nothing wrong.
    2. You have yet to admit that the blame is Keaton's alone.

Without these two, you are just a grand-standing person beating their hands against their chest.

I can understand wanting to stand strong and "fight" you should make sure there is something worth stand there and fighting for...

Nudity wasn't the problem with this show on GMA. It's a non-issue. This whole world is going to hell in a handbasket... We can't save this world or even this country, but we can save the people around us. That's our mission. To save the lost. Not make this world/country more sane/perfect.

That's why this could be a slippery slope. Some people in America say that Europe is better than us because they are "open-minded."

Open-minded to the voice of satan himself.

People say all kinds of things. That doesn't make them true. However, I consider being open-minded (that is, really listening to and considering the opinions and insights of others instead of just looking for opportunities to condemn) to be a virtue.

People can be closed-minded and be a growing disciple of the devil, but I don't think anyone can be closed-minded and be a disciple of Jesus.

Probably the most versatile word ever devised. Can be used as most every part of speach.

Well folks are certainly free to think the church is more dangerous and does more harm than incidents like this. But the FCC's job is to oversee behavior like this. And it most certainly matters. It seems some Christians spend more time bashing the church and ignoring ridiculous behavior like this.

Doesn't sound like anything worth wasting my time on.

Clearly, there was no intention to violate standards on the part of ABC, just somebody who forgot she was on TV for a second.

While Keaton needs to work on her vocabulary (and her acting skills, for that matter), and while ABC needs to be a little more attentive and ready to use the "dump" button, I can sympathize with Keaton.

Many times, I've absent-mindedly said something I didn't mean to and later wished I could take back.

I'm sorry, but in our society today, complaining about every little nuance of every stupid, trivial thing is something that really gets on my nerves and I'm not going to contribute to it.

She made a mistake. Get over it and grow up.

    Christians shouldn't bash the church.

It's the FCC's reponsibility. They need to do their job.

I haven't seen any "bashing" in this thread. And to characterize my comments as bashing is to completely misunderstand the nature of my comments.

In your opinion, did Jesus "bash" the Jewish religion or did He speak prophetically against the abuse of people under the guise of the Jewish faith?

I was referring to the personal experience of myself and people I know well who have had to bear up under the extra-biblical (or contra-biblical) burdens of those in local church leadership... not to mention facing condemnation, ostracism, and or explusion from purportedly "Christian" churches and fellowships for taking biblical but unpopular stands.

And Christians need to act as disciples of Jesus. Disciples of Jesus look for opportunities to redeem bad situations.

The sanitized world comment and this is how far the church has gone comment are bashing the church.

What Jesus does is different then what we can do. If Jesus said something is a sin than it is. I'm not going to question what Jesus did.

I never brought your name or comments into my last comment.

Roger said that on page 2 of this thread...

Okay, fair enough. But I think Roger is right. The church is far too upset about sinners acting like sinners and not concerned enough with spreading the good news that Jesus has come not to condemn, but to save. And the result of that "saving" is that we now have the power to live a transformed life and work toward reconciling the world to God.

Instead of wasting our time just complaining about moral issues, we need to work to actively redeem them in our capacity as ambassadors for Christ.

We should be upset when they say things on programs that aren't supposed to have that kind of filth on them.

I'd talk with her if I could. Maybe she would start acting like a lady instead of sailor. :saint:

Until the world recognizes that they have a sin problem they will never come to a saving knowledge of Christ. If we drop a Holy and righteous standard then there can be no knowledge of sin.

Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
