Report: Autopsy analysis shows Michael Brown may have gone for Darren Wilson’s gun

In protests held in Ferguson, Mo., for more than two months, some said 18-year-old Michael Brown had his hands up when he was killed by police officer Darren Wilson. Hence the clarion call: “Hands up, don’t shoot.”

But a St. Louis Post-Dispatch analysis of Brown’s official county autopsy it has obtained suggests the teenager may not have had his hands raised after all. Experts told the newspaper Brown was shot Aug. 9., at close range — and may have been reaching for Wilson’s weapon. The autopsy found material “consistent with products that are discharged from the barrel of a firearm” in a wound on Brown’s thumb. Judy Melinek, a forensic pathologist in San Francisco, said this “supports the fact that this guy is reaching for the gun, if he has gunpowder particulate material in the wound.”

Melinek, who was not involved in the investigation, said the autopsy did not support those who claim Brown was attempting to flee or surrender.

“If he has his hand near the gun when it goes off, he’s going for the officer’s gun,” she said.

Quoting the paper:

She said Brown was facing Wilson when Brown took a shot to the forehead, two shots to the chest and a shot to the upper right arm. The wound to the top of Brown’s head would indicate he was falling forward or in a lunging position toward the shooter; the shot was instantly fatal. A sixth shot that hit the forearm traveled from the back of the arm to the inner arm, which means Brown’s palms could not have been facing Wilson, as some witnesses have said, Melinek said. That trajectory shows Brown probably was not taking a standard surrender position with arms above the shoulders and palms out when he was hit, she said.”

Although I've not seen too much about it on the BB, I am sure we are all aware of what is going on in Ferguson, MO. Admittedly, the purpose of this thread is more of a rant than anything, but there are a lot of things going on there that I can't stand.

Before I begin, let me state that I don't know what happened that day. I don't claim to have inside knowledge. It is possible that the officer was totally in the wrong and killed in cold blood, fueled by racial hatred. It's also possible that that the "victim" was reaching for the officer's weapon and the officer acted in self defense. We just don't know yet. I just wanted to be clear on that point.

One thing that angers me is the way the news is reporting this. It's not "an officer shot a civilian", or even "an officer shot an unarmed civilian". The news outlets are reporting "A white officer shot and killed an unarmed black man". This instantly brings race into it. We don't know if the officer was even in the wrong, yet now he is viewed as racist. Even if the officer was in the wrong, we don't know that race was the determining factor. But we instantly have to bring race into it.

A second thing that frustrates me is that the news keep reporting that 2/3 of the population is black, but only 3 of the police officers are black. That is not the station's fault. It's not as if they only hire white guys. If the community wants more black representation on the force, then more black men (or women) need to get up and go to the academy. It really is that simple.

Now, one thing that upsets me that I saw video footage of is the police force gassing a media crew, then going over in gas masks and pointing their cameras to the ground when the crew fled the gas. This is not right. In the video, you can clearly see that the crew is not in the way, or part of some mob. They are on the side of the street, and get gassed. You can see this footage at http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/08/13/ferguson-police-race-brown-killing/14030889/. This was not right.

The reaction of the city has me baffled. It makes it hard to keep faith in the human race. "We're mad, so let's loot stores whose owners had absolutely nothing to do with the situation. That'll show the police!"

On a side note, I do believe that this shows why the police force getting the equipment that some on here are against them getting (armored vehicles, body armor, etc) is actually a good thing. This is four nights in a row that they've had to deal with riots. There have been shootings. There have been death threats towards the police. If I were them, I would want to be as protected as possible.

You always seem to insert a lot of heart-felt thoughts in your writing. Let me just say that IMHO, Ferguson is a power keg waiting for the fuse to be lit. Some say it will be lit regardless of the findings, and sadly this may be a fact.

It is a shame, and an American tragedy that the media still use terms like those you mentioned to describe the shooting incident and the make-up of the population in Ferguson! Even though we have freedom of speech, the media needs to come to the place where they exercise responsibility of speech.

I posted a thought today, asking if America will ever get to the place where it is no longer "white cop shoots and kills a black teen" and rather report that "in Ferguson today, a teen was shot and killed by police during a routine stop that went wrong! An investigation into the events leading up to the shooting and death of the teen has begun and results will be available in a few months! The police officer is on unpaid leave while the information and reports are sorted out!"

That is what we should be reporting as a melting pot society. A society of mixed races, trying to merge and assimilate into one mixed culture/society that is without thecolor barriers and walls of racial divide!

Not as long as we have dividers leading the country. That means primarily the democrat party who use racial division like a hammer to stay in power. White against black. But the coming racial divide is going to be between blacks and hispanics. It has already begun.

The old white guys with all the money that call the racial tunes for the democrat party may find themselves on the outside looking in.

Usually the phrase "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree." applies to a son following his father's example. But now Michael Brown's mom, Leslie McSpadden, is up for felony armed robbery charges. She beat up some relatives for selling Michael Brown t-shirts on October 16th. But shh, let's keep it quiet because she's going to address the UN in Geneva on peacelater this month!

This is false.

One argument with the OJ fiasco was people found it hard to believe one man could kill two people with a knife. A lot of people think Brown was not a threat because he had no weapon. They forget that way before guns, fists killed, and in MMA we see violence with mere fistacuffs. And Brown was a big person when matching up with the smaller cop. Having already been attacked while in the car, I doubt any of us would stop from using any means available to make sure we go home at the end of your shift.

Would this be nearly as big a media circus had Brown been white, or the cop black and the attacker white? I doubt it. Does that mean this should not be thoroughly investigated? No! It needs to be looked over, but the rioting and racial tension seems to be getting old.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Yasser Arafat, a known and admitted terrorist addressed the UN. Why would a simple felon bother them.

I couldn't agree more. Obama has done a great job at subtly making racism an issue. His kind of politics is suspect, at least in my eyes. He has set us back 40 years. And like Condi Rice said, racial baiting in today's society is appalling.
