Fighting terror the Sydney way

By now, you have probably heard of the Islamic gunman in Sydney holding hostages in the Lindt cafe. I was just several hundred meters from there the night before with my family listening to carols outside of St Mary's cathedral. Last year I worked at the emergency department at Sydney Hospital just throwing distance from the cafe.

The city has responded remarkably to this event with an orderly evacuation of the region around the cafe. The media has also been amazing in it's discipline in cooperating with police and not revealing information that would jeopardize the hostages like the demands and identity of the gunman.

What makes me most proud of Sydney is the #illridewithyou hashtag that has risen up to support the muslim community that will likely receive unfortunate backlash from this event.

#illridewithyou: support for Muslim Australians takes off following Sydney siege

I pray this comes out with no deaths. As far as the Muslim Community and any backlash, that could be taken care of if they were as outspoken as everyone else instead of silent like they so often are.

Muslim leaders condemn Sydney siege

...
'The Grand Mufti and the Australian National Imam Council condemn this criminal act unequivocally and reiterate that such actions are denounced in part and in whole in Islam,' Professor Mohamed said in a statement.
...
Australian Federation of Islamic Councils past president, Rehin Ghauri, said he was gravely concerned for his 'Australian brothers and sisters'.

'Holding people hostage like this is totally, absolutely and honestly un-Islamic,' Mr Ghauri told AAP.

He hoped those behind the attack were 'quickly apprehended and brought to justice'.

Like they say .....

All's quite on the Muslim front!

Agreed. Just like black Americans who refuse to speak up about the black on black killings, Muslims living in countries they call home, refuse to speak out and I think it is for fear of retaliation.

Praying all hostages live. The terrorist is probably a suicide by cop ending!

You didn't even see or read the link provided showing Muslim leaders in Australia were united in condemning the terrorist action, did you?

I'm talking about Muslims world-wide. I thought you'd know that .... you seem to know what I'm thinking, like some kind of mind reader, per all the acrid comments you make regarding my comments. Move on ITL, you are just an angry person.

I did read the solidarity of the Muslims in that city, and how fellow Aussies were willing to accompany them to work for fear of retaliation towards Muslims for this lone wolf act.

Identity of gunman released.

He sounds like a disturbed lone gunman who is a self-proclaimed islamic cleric known to police on bail for charges of sexual assault and indecency. He was previously charged with being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife and sentenced for writing abusive letters to families of dead australian soldiers.
