By now, you have probably heard of the Islamic gunman in Sydney holding hostages in the Lindt cafe. I was just several hundred meters from there the night before with my family listening to carols outside of St Mary's cathedral. Last year I worked at the emergency department at Sydney Hospital just throwing distance from the cafe.
The city has responded remarkably to this event with an orderly evacuation of the region around the cafe. The media has also been amazing in it's discipline in cooperating with police and not revealing information that would jeopardize the hostages like the demands and identity of the gunman.
What makes me most proud of Sydney is the #illridewithyou hashtag that has risen up to support the muslim community that will likely receive unfortunate backlash from this event.
#illridewithyou: support for Muslim Australians takes off following Sydney siege
