Fire & Brimstone Preaching

We live in a day that looks down upon confrontational evangelism and fire & brimstone preaching. I regret that I have not been as bold on Hell as I should have been, but the Lord wants me to be more bold as I was listening to RC Sproul yesterday and he praised Fire & Brimstone preaching which was the style of Jonathan Edwards, and many other puritans and endorsed the use of gospel tracts that bring fear into converts. Ray Comfort does not agree with this, and his tracts are not as confrontative on Hell as that of Chic Tracts and the Fellowship Tract league. Ray has a point, however looking at the example of the Lord Jesus Christ whom did preach hard on Hell often, and told a very graphic and terrible story of a rich man that went there and was burning. So I will justify Fire & Brimstone preaching and Fire & Brimstone gospel tracts.

So why do you think most reject preaching that addresses Hell these days? RC said that its because of the rise of the love for self and self-love just as 2 Timothy says.

Can you give us an example of what you mean by preaching hard on hell?

Is it a matter of how long you preach? Or who you are applying it to? Or how loud you speak?

Is it a matter of content, emotion, duration, volume....etc?

I wonder what a good definition of fire and brimstone preaching is? One can preach on hell without shouting and pounding the pulpit.

I had always read that Edwards didn't have very good verbal skills. He spoke in a monotone drab voice, but he spoke the truth and preach the gospel. It was God through His word that sparked the Great Awakening and not necessarily a fire and brimstone preacher.

I don't feel this type of shouting and clinching fists is necessary, if this is what you mean by fire and brimstone.

If it is manufactured in order to manipulate the crowd I agee. If it is born out of true passion for the word and the seriousness of the issue then I disagree.
