Food Stamps

If you would have given money to the couple I was referring to - then you are part of the problem - as you are enabling their their addiction to drugs and lack of work ethics.

Well, I guess I should do the Christian thing and let them starve! It would fit right in with some self-righteous churches I know of.

OK, so how do you propose to reform foodstamps? Do you even know what the criterion for foodstamps is to get it?

Having worked with drug addicts, and their families, yes. I also know how the system is abused. And I am very suprised, and disappointed that you, of all people would attack the messenger, instead of addressing the reasons behind the abuse. You won't even admit the abuse.

You didnt answer either of my two questions to you.

Out of curiousity, I wonder what the response would be if, instead of food stamps, we gave the poor (at least those who have homes with a yard) a couple of hoes and rakes and packets of seeds to grow their own food.

I was a social worker for many years and I used to deal with people on food stamps every day. I always used to wonder why they didn't turn their lawn over and plant a garden.

Maybe they should grow wheat & oats for bread & put chickens in for eggs, a milk cow in the back yard & raise a hog or two.

Since the church has done such a poor job of helping people, I would rather see the government do it.

Oh and yes Salty, I would gladly spend my money to help those who are in need. Just because I don't parade it around here like some do doesn't mean I don't help those in need that I can. I fear that some help others so they can brag about it to their peers.

For people that don't want to help others, there is always a reason they can find...

Can't give them Foodstamps.. they may buy a pepsi...
Can't give them Foodstamps... They may buy some steak or shrimp

CAn't pay for their electric bill.. they didn't pay for it last month.. it's not my place to help them get caught up...

Sorry Salty.. I disagree with you here..
I've been on FS.. and Yes I bought soda with it... along with beans, PB and J, meat.(Not extravagant though).. but Yes I bought things that my family enjoyed...

The Poor are oppressed in this country, and Jesus came to bring the Kingdom of God to them... give them a taste of Heaven...

Why is it conservatives, which I am one.. want the Government to promote Christian values in areas such as prayer in school, or Bibles in school.. etc..
But don't want the Gov. to promote the christian value of helping the poor...

Maybe I am becoming more liberal than I want to admit.. but NO where did I see Jesus condemn someone before helping them..

Key word is "Reason" as opposed to excuse

I'm not talking about an occasional soda- what concerned me was the $300 per month for cigarettes - and more importantly they refused to reduce that at all. + there were several other expenditures they well could have done without.

Allowing Bibles in school is one thing. I'm not saying the govt should pay for them (except a copy or 2 for the library) but they should not hinder their use either. But it is NOT the job of the govt, especially the Federal govt to steal from one group of people to give to another. I contend that social agcy should be doing that - under their own guidance and rules.

Maybe I am becoming more liberal than I want to admit.. but NO where did I see Jesus condemn someone before helping them.
One definition of liberal is giving freely (Deut 5:14) of your own choice. My problem is when you want to give liberally to someone using my money.

Suppose Bill needed transpiration, and I told him to go see Tiny Tim, he will let you use his car. Bill comes to you and says you MUST let him borrow you car, because Salty said it was okay. You would say I am nuts - and you would be absolutely right.

Richard and his wife were not going to starve. They had money to buy food. That is a fact. Those who demand that I help the greedy fit right in with some self-righteous folks I know.

You are really having reading comprehension problems in this thread. Salty never said to let them starve, but he said they should get their priorities straight. Cut the $300.00 cigarette purchases every month down and use that money to buy food and other necessities.

I know you are nuts... but not because of that!

I see your point.. and you are not as extreme as some as I have met.. we agree.

Even under a theocracy, the law did not give people food. The law provided that the poor could glean the fields and harvest the corners for themselves. No one was commanded to hand them processed food. They had to work.

If there is to be government assistance, that is the kind it should be limited to.

Guys, have you seen the google ad on page 3? Aparently Google thinks ya'll should take your food stamps and buy Snickers bars and then you'd stop being grumpy zombies!

Seems you'd be able to speak Spanish as well, since that was the language the ad used.

No, some probably spend more. He is only one example. I have dwelt with others that are on the same path.
Yes, I do realize some are only truly seek a temporally "hand up". I would rather help someone who will soon be self-sufficient, than there will be two of us to help others.

And NO, I am not talking about those who cannot support them selves - as opposed to those who are not WILLING.

SO, EWF, just keep throwing your money at those who only seek to use you. Then go home and throw the rest into the fireplace ...

Here is my game plan Salty (actually in progress). I sit with every unfortunate person that has been layed off in my community, down on his luck, etc & I review with them their finances. There are those who, through no fault of their own, who are in bad shape (due to the economy) in desperate need. I then help them apply for food stamps, SS, disability whatever the state & feds allow. Then if they need assistance with a ride to the county seat to meet with a burocrat, I do that on Wednesdays & Fridays. Thats more than anyone did for me when I was starving as a boy. BTW, you should look into the stats of how many in the military are also applying. Personally, I think your out of touch with whats really going on out there....gotta be the reason your so tone deaf.

Yes, I would be interested in that, and I would ask why someone who starts at 1400 dollars a month + housing allowance needs additional assistance.
(BTW - if you are not aware housing allowance is tax free as well as some other pay and allowances)

In all seriousness (since my early post was obviously in jest), I would like to chime in here.

First: I do not like the current food stamp program. It allows people to stay on the system, and not do ANYTHING. That is idiotic. In addition, some people who SHOULD be getting them, are not. I think of my elderly father, who is not eligible, even though he is struggling. I have known 25 year olds, by contrast, who were not working (on purpose), because they could get more by not working.

Second though, I encourage EVERYONE who can qualify to get them. You see, if you are working and paying taxes (even Social Security/Medicare, gas tax, state tax, sales tax, etc.), you are not taking "other peoples money," you are just keeping more of your own. I saw a report the other day that detailed out how people who are at the poverty level, but working (think 10k to 20k per year), are paying almost 50 percent of their income in taxes. Under that kind of onerous burden, I say if you can get it, whether that is Earned Income Credit, Food stamps, Medicaid, etc., TAKE IT!! Do not be stupid. YES, we need to change the system, but until we get it done, take every penny you can back from the government.
