I guess their Bibles don't have Romans 1 in them. Or a bunch of other passages.
Obviously I am from Australia so I don't know anything about your death penalty laws etc. (Apparently the last death penalty here was in 1967). Or how American Christians believe the death penalty is justified in extreme cases.

Hello Joey. You asked the wrong question. The question is how can someone be a Christian and not obey the command of God for the death penalty?

I would say that LifeWay Research has some flaw in their results. It would be interesting to know what translation was mostly used, the age group, gender make-up, backgrounds (denominations) and a few other things. I think the researches were eating bad dog food when this survey was taken.

Is that the support for the death penalty taken from the Old Testament?
Leviticus 24:17 "Whoever takes a human life shall surely be put to death. 18 Whoever takes an animal’s life shall make it good, life for life. 19If anyone injures his neighbor, as he has done it shall be done to him, 20fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; whatever injury he has given a person shall be given to him. 21 Whoever kills an animal shall make it good, and whoever kills a person shall be put to death. 22You shall have the same rule for the sojourner and for the native, for I am the LORD your God."

The support is taken from Gen. before the law was given. Lev is to the Jew but the death penalty is for all man kind even when before the law.
Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.
Also we find it in the NT.
For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to [execute] wrath upon him that doeth evil.

Thankyou for your explanation from Genesis. That makes more sense now.

I have got the impression that both points of views are just as firmly convinced their beliefs are correct as the other. Also both perspectives make some very good well thought out arguments.
I have watched some Jon Stewart Daily shows and Colbert report episodes as well. Is there a tendency for Democrats to be more anti-death penalty overall? Are they the more liberal political party?

Democrats are the more liberal party and have a greater anti-death penalty tendency than Republicans. According to a poll, 80% of Republicans and 58% of Democrats support the use of capital punishment in murder cases.
No wonder it is flawed!
