In which every dubious ruling seems to help Al Franken.


Strange things keep happening in Minnesota, where the disputed recount in the Senate race between Norm Coleman and Al Franken may be nearing a dubious outcome. Thanks to the machinations of Democratic Secretary of State Mark Ritchie and a meek state Canvassing Board, Mr. Franken may emerge as an illegitimate victor.

Mr. Franken started the recount 215 votes behind Senator Coleman, but he now claims a 225-vote lead and suddenly the man who was insisting on "counting every vote" wants to shut the process down. He's getting help from Mr. Ritchie and his four fellow Canvassing Board members, who have delivered inconsistent rulings and are ignoring glaring problems with the tallies.

Since no candidate won a majority of the vote I would have liked to have seen a runoff like they had in Georgia for the U.S. Senate race there last year.

Under the current scenario, there is no way for either Coleman or Franken to be sworn in this year without a cloud over the legitimacy of his victory.

Going back thru the posts, on 12-20 I said Franken was stealing the election. I accused him of funny business on an obviously legit vote. You most likely did not perform that research. I also said this....

But if the people allow him to steal their election, then they deserve to be represented by this partisan hack atheist liar. I don't care, either way. But don't tell me he's not stealing this.

I have not said anything since the recount started.

I think you should stop gossiping about what people would do in certain situations. I moved on from this weeks ago.

I know nothing of the mechanics of this election, but it is incredible that someone like Al Franken would get past the primary. Whether he won or not, what kind of mindset allows him to get that close regardless which way the few deciding votes fall? It says lots more about Minnesota than the electoral count.

The only thing more ridiculous is the time Jerry Springer was thinking of running for the Senate from Ohio. On second thought, maybe it is on the same level.

It is beyond me what is going on the the minds of the voters up there. I thought Norm Coleman was a decent Senator. Al Franken would never have gotten past a primary in Kentucky, maybe not even on the ballot.

It's almost enough to make one wish for a return to the old political machines such as that of Chicago with "Hizzoner" Richard J. Daley (D) ( "Vote early, and vote often!" - That one has definitely not gone by the wayside!); Philadelphia with the "Gas Ring" of 'Boss' McManes & Co. (R); New York and 'Tammany Hall', with 'Boss' Tweed (D); or Ohio and Cincinnati with "Bosses" Hanna, and Cox (R) - all places where you knew in advance that any close election would be "stolen 'fair and square' "!

In KY, all the close elections were "bought and paid for", and that "fair and square", so we had little question here, in the olden days. I assure you, that plenty of 'vote buying' still goes on in KY, as most years, we wind up with some indictments for fraud, or reported instances instances of 'voting irregularity', which is really, just a nice euphemism for unprovable 'voting fraud'.
