An angry state Sen. Fran Millar, R-Dunwoody, is promising to end Sunday balloting in DeKalb County when state lawmakers assemble in the Capitol next January.

Georgia Sen. Fran Millar, Republican of Dunwoody, has vowed to fight a plan to allow voting on Sunday because precincts will be "dominated by African American shoppers and... several large African American mega churches," and he "would prefer more educated voters."

Millar made the comments Tuesday morning on Facebook in response to news that Dekalb County would offer Sunday, Oct. 26, as an extra voting day at three different locations for working residents. Lee May, the heavily African American area's "interim CEO" who was appointed by conservative Gov. Nathan Deal, announced the plan in conjunction with a Monday visit from First Lady Michelle Obama.

Now we are to have Sunday voting at South DeKalb Mall just prior to the election. Per Jim Galloway of the AJC, this location is dominated by African American shoppers and it is near several large African American mega churches such as New Birth Missionary Baptist. Galloway also points out the Democratic Party thinks this is a wonderful idea – what a surprise. I’m sure Michelle Nunn and Jason Carter are delighted with this blatantly partisan move in DeKalb.

Is it possible church buses will be used to transport people directly to the mall since the poll will open when the mall opens? If this happens, so much for the accepted principle of separation of church and state.

Kind of funny hearing a Republican complain about abuses of "separation of church and state" since that is usually a Dem's rallying cry.

Do you disagree with Sunday voting because it's the Lord's Day, or for some other reason? Would you be opposed to Saturday voting, for example?

I've never understood why Election Day is on a day where most people work. I think having Election "Day" be on a weekend, on a Saturday and Sunday, makes a lot of sense.

There is a world of difference between wanting to stop early voting and not wanting it on Sunday.

When I read the article, what I saw as the objection, was that only certain parts of town would have early voting.

Why not EVERY election district.

Personally, I would like to see Election Day on Memorial Day (last Monday of May) and Inauguration Day on 4th of July

Salty, believe every district would be open else there would be a law suit over not all polls being open.

This is simply a politician, continuing the GOP war on voting by minority groups. You know those folk who "are not like us" and probably will vote the wrong way. At least he was honest enough to give his racist reason. That is more than lots of folk would do.

Maybe he should use some of his campaign money to bus white folk to the polls. :laugh:

I am not in favor of Sunday voting, but it is done many places around the country and I expect that more and more places will open Sunday to voting.

When I was a kid no one was supposed to go to a movie on Sunday, there were Blue Laws limiting businesses. So much has changed.

Just a weird story. Even though he tries to qualify his statement about 'educated" later, it's still just reprehensible.

This is more of that Republican mindset that if you're not "educated" on the issues, you shouldn't be able to vote. Talk radio hosts have been saying it for years along with saying they believe you should have to pass a test to vote.

For folks who are big on the Constitution and the rule of law,they certainly seem to try a lot to maneuver around it.

It's odd, when every county can likewise follow suit with Sunday voting, why Mr. Millar hasn't had a problem in the past with early voting or the low number of black voters on work Tuesdays.

One has to wonder why he would have a problem with more folks being able to vote?

Partisan politics is just another reason why the church shouldn't be so closely aligned with any political party. It seems to make folks do and say some stupid stuff.
