No, I don't live in the desert, but with rabbit and racoon problems, you seemed to be living in the back woods. I can't legally fire a gun where I live either.
As for coyotes, they are all over the south now that their natural enemy, the panther has diminished. We have coyotes in Alabama and my relatives in Louisiana have told me what a nuisance they are there. At night, where my dad had his deer camp, they could be heard everywhere. My aunt had said that she couldn't keep a cat because coyotes would always kill it.

I live in a suburb of Seattle in the midst of many homes. It's actually surprising at times how much wildlife lives in the city. It would be nice to have a wooded area.

I live on 5 acres in the AZ desert and have a chained link area with rabbit wire at the bottom. It is 40' x 80' garden area in the corner of the property but I've all but given up trying to grow things having lost the war against the gophers, prairie dogs, rabbits and birds. However, I have a 20' x 20' 3" PVC garden house that I put pavers around to keep the prairie dogs from digging under so fast and bait them with a dozen rat traps which creates a layer of protection and I keep this in my garden area to grow a few things, but this system really cramps my style!

Its a warzone out there!

I have an idea to build a new garden area near the house, 40' x 40', with a wire mesh fence that goes 2' into the ground as a footing and will have a lip on the top rail to keep the prairie dogs from climbing over. Hopefully, all I would have to contend with is the birds which my 3" PVC garden house would protect the things the birds would go after. This way I could rotate the garden house between 4 corners inside this new area and plant whatever in the rest. - Not sure if I'm going to find the time and energy to do this before Spring though...

It's actually surprising at times how much wildlife lives in the city.

I'm in the boonies and I was surprised to see how many nocturnal feral housecats there are out here . I caught several in a short while in a large cage trap set for a coyote, but no coyote.

Gardening sometimes is not very economical and it can be a lot of work.

When you raise your own food you know how it was taken care of. It can also be a fun hobby or job, if you enjoy seeing things come to life. Finding solutions to problems such as prairie dogs and moles can be challenging in good or bad way.

It was amazing reading when I was younger what Israel was doing to turn the desert into farmland and beautiful spaces.
