There are a variety of reasons we are involved in the Middle East.
But in terms of petroleum and natural gas, the US became a net exporter of refined petroleum produces in 2011. In 2014, the US became the third largest producer of crude oil, after Saudi Arabia and Russia, and the second-largest exporter of refined products, after Russia. in 2019, the US became a net exporter of refined petroleum produces and crude oil.
Our current obligations in the Middle East came long before the huge advances in fracking technology during torward the end of the George W. Bush Administration, and throughout the Obama Administration.
Because gasoline is not free. If the prices remained where they were, stateside drilling and extraction would completely shut down and we would be back to importing most of our oil from other countries. By having a moderate price for oil, we employ oil and gas workers, pump our nation's money back into our own economy instead of sending it to other nations. The oil and gas industry is served by almost all sectors of the American economy, so a moderate price for those produces lifts everyone.
It seems that those who shout "America First" would understand that instead of trying to complain about it. But of course, it is a stick they can use to beat Biden with, so we shouldn't look too closely at the stick, since the point is to beat up on Biden.
There are plenty of real things to criticize about Biden, but this one isn't it.
