Jimmy Carter and the Energy Crisis that Never Happened | Thomas A. Firey
Everyone one of Carters energy policy talking points was a lie, and Carter was rightly blamed for all of the nations energy ills of that time.. regardless of who did what before him.
I had just begun driving at 16 when Carter got elected. Guess who everyone I knew blamed the energy crisis on, it was Carter. So its like the infections started before Carter, and under Carter it all came to a head of the crisis, the boil was full on with that guy.

Forty years ago tonight, President Jimmy Carter delivered his Address to the Nation on National Energy Policy, better known as the “Moral Equivalent of War” speech. Seated behind his ornate desk in the Oval Office and wearing a sober pinstriped suit, he offered a litany of dark predictions:

  • “The oil and natural gas we rely on for 75 percent of our energy are running out.”
  • “Unless profound changes are made to lower oil consumption, we now believe that early in the 1980s the world will be demanding more oil than it can produce.”
  • “World oil production can probably keep going up for another six or eight years. But some time in the 1980s it can’t go up much more. Demand will overtake production. We have no choice about that.”
  • “We can’t substantially increase our domestic production…”
  • “Within ten years we would not be able to import enough oil—from any country, at any acceptable price.”
  • “If we fail to act soon, we will face an economic, social and political crisis that will threaten our free institutions.”

More dire predictions that were "fear induced"!
1 New ice age around 1970!
2 World population causing world-wide starvation before 2000!
3 Oil deposits depleted in "ten years"!
4 Nuclear power plants will cause a nuclear winter !
5 Concealed carry will make our streets a blood-bath!
6 Global cooling (ice age); global warming (polar bears die from heat exhaustion?:Roflmao); now just global "change" (weather has NOT co-operated :Rolleyes )

THE SKY IS FALLING - THE SKY IS FALLING - THE SKY IS FALLING ! !

Gives credence to the quote - "Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it."

Everyone one of Carters energy policy talking points was a lie...
Not lies. With the technology and knowledge that was current at the time, everything he was saying was true. What changed was technology. Slant drilling, and then the fracking revolution has revolutionized the oil and gas marketplace. However, it costs a lot more to implement that technology, so the prices are higher.

...and Carter was rightly blamed for all of the nations energy ills of that time.. regardless of who did what before him.
That's silly. That's like blaming you for the fatal flaws of the Treaty of Versailles. Carter did not control what happened before him, nor after him. I could list a number of issues with Carter's personal leadership style and poor decisions he made, but blaming him for a situation he inherited is dishonest and foolish.

I had just begun driving at 16 when Carter got elected. Guess who everyone I knew blamed the energy crisis on, it was Carter.
In the heavily segregated small town where I grew up, most people I knew blamed all crime on black people. So what? There are a lot of prejudiced people around who blame people they don't like for everything.

So its like the infections started before Carter, and under Carter it all came to a head of the crisis, the boil was full on with that guy.
He did not handle things very well because he was inexperienced, he did not know how to delegate (he didn't even have a chief of staff until later in his Presidency), and the nation was going through the aftermath of Watergate with severe disillusionment over whether or not the government could be trusted. Carter inherited a mess and much of it got worse during his term.

That was true, with the technology and proven resources that were available. As mentioned before, slant drilling and fracking technology revolutionized extraction. Moreover, advances in deepwater drilling and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (developed and constructed between 1975-1977) encouraged exploration and development of the vast oil reserves of Alaska.

“Unless profound changes are made to lower oil consumption, we now believe that early in the 1980s the world will be demanding more oil than it can produce.”
And we have lowered oil consumption in some ways (better mileage vehicles) and an emphasis on efficiency.

“World oil production can probably keep going up for another six or eight years. But some time in the 1980s it can’t go up much more. Demand will overtake production. We have no choice about that.””
Yes, if trends continued, that's what would have happened. Responsible management of resources requires planning according to what is known, not what is hoped for.

“We can’t substantially increase our domestic production…”
Not with what was known at the time.

“Within ten years we would not be able to import enough oil—from any country, at any acceptable price.”
Yes, with what was known at the time.

“If we fail to act soon, we will face an economic, social and political crisis that will threaten our free institutions.”
Yes, with what was known at the time.

You are criticizing Carter for not being hopeful about things that had no clear solutions at the time.

I hope you and others will remember that when you go after leaders who propose heavy research into green energy technology, since most of the stated criticism of it is that it is too optimistic, and is currently unfeasible.

If Carter was a liar (YOUR characterization), then those who criticize the Green New Deal concept are probably liars. That's YOUR logic and standard.

You're delusional.
It's fascinating how persons who are completely untethered from facts, logic, and history will claim that others are delusional.

Have you noticed that I corrected predicted the results of the 2018 and 2020 elections (against massive disagreement around here), as well as numerous other events? It's not that I am a great predictor, but I am attuned to facts, logic, and history.

Anyone who is willing can do the same and escape their self-imposed delusions.

Laugh all you want, herd immunity is really all there is and true for all of history.
Vaccinations are also designed to create herd immunity, as not everyone gets vaccinated and vaccines dont work in all cases.
Herd immunity guarantees survival of the herd, not individuals.
Forget that....we aren’t cattle. Humans have potential to live long & productive lives whatever the age. And yes I will laugh because I do NOT accept the mentality that Gods people are to be categorized as cattle.

For the United States, it was a shortage. It was OPEC refusing to sell oil to the United States. That's what "...caused by OPEC" means.

Exactly - it was NOT a shortage of oil

This article explains it rather well.
The Truth About the 1973 Arab Oil Crisis

Part of the reason was the value of the dollar.
I was in Germany at the time.
-
Lets suppose my rent was DM 350 (DM = Deutsche Marks) So in 1971 - it would take US $ 100 to pay my rent. But the $ was falling. When it dropped to $1=3 DM - it then cost me $116 to pay my rent ( a 16% increase) - When I left Germany, the Mark had fallen to about $1 = 2.20 marks. It would then cost me 159 dollars for my rent. so that amounted to a 59% increase in my rent.

.

You're still delusional.

People that say things like "we now have an administration who is dealing sanely with the issues of the pandemic." are definitely untethered from facts logic and history.
