If you think that government money will ever come without strings, you probably wait up for the Easter Bunny.

Not going to happen. Never. You accept a handout, and the goverment will assume that it's entitled to tell you how it will be spent. Count on it.

We need to drastically reduce the impact that government has on our everyday lives.

    Yep.

Of course, government handouts in California don't come with strings.

They come with massive chains. The kind of "red tape" that never breaks.

The coming areas of battlegrounds I see coming soon to a court near you:
    • The refusal of churches to hire folks who do the "alternative lifestyle" thing. Surprised the 9th hasn't already forced the churches to conform their hiring practices to the outside world.
    • the Americans with Disabilities act "covering" folks with some of the more bizarre mental-health 'disorders.' Churches being forced to hire folks with various 'disabilities' My church might have to hire someone with "oppositiional defiance disorder," or someone struggling with gambling, porn, etc. "Moral clauses" for churches will grow tougher to enforce.
    • Eventually (especially in Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals territory), uncertified (by government) teachers will not be allowed to teach. There will be various and sundry requirements placed on teachers--some more ridiculous than others.
    • Some rather ancillary items will also be regulated. Kids won't be allowed to bring fast food to their church-school cafeteria.
    • Lawsuits will skyrocket--especially those dealing with discrimination.
Of course, those are all forecasts, and I could miss them all. But I doubt it somehow.

But with government money comes government strings. That's why we refused to participate in one of the faith-based initiatives 3 or so years ago.

That implies our fellowman doing that which is right.

    Jobs given out fairly
    fair wages
    no prejudice

I completely agree with you, insofar that our fellow man ain't gettin' it done in these areas.

But I don't see the government being the cure to all the ills in these areas.

One example: Prejudice. Bigotry is a despicable sin--an affront to Almighty God. But you can't legislate crimes of thought--only action.

I also don't trust our government to decide what a "fair wage" is. Do some folks need more income? Sure. But is it the government's job to ensure your living? I'll take care of that one myself.

I'm also very leery of the Government being extremely active in the "giving out of jobs." Last time I checked, our Government had set the standard in cronyism, wastefulness, and inefficiency. They can't manage themselves very well; how can they manage us?

I'll stop now. Having been dirt poor, and having very little for years, I value self-sufficiency and hard work a great deal. Government, often times, seems to reward the opposite.

I must admit I struggle with this balancing act--freedom of the individual vs. protection of the weak by the peoples' government.

And, with my personality, I'll probably err on the side of individual freedom.

If you throw rocks at me, do it underhand.

From the link in the OP.

Jesus said the gates of hell will not prevail, Thomasson says they are prevailing.

Either Jesus or Thomasson is right. I wonder which one?

    Lahk ah a'ways said, ya'll:

They all gon' do what they all wan' do, an' nobody's methinks ain't gon' matter, so I guess what we all kin do, is foller Deut'ron'my 6:6-9 :

Seriously speaking, I don't find anything in the Bible that says we ought to have God in our government.

That is the very reason God founded national Israel and gave Israel all the commandments of the likes of Deut. 6 and civil laws and national laws, to show to the nations around them that they were a people of God.

They, not the nations around them.

I fail to see where God instructed Israel to make sure that the nations around them had Him in their governments as well. He did not even instruct the Jewish people in their captivity to make sure His laws were enforced upon Darius' kingdom, or Daniel to make sure that Nebuchadnezzar was converted to Him and running his government in accordance with His principles.

If we are God's people, then we make sure our God is exalted in our churches and homes, and when the time comes to resist government dictating to us who to accept in our churches, whether as members or as staff, then we resist, bringing into principle Acts 5:29, "we ought to obey God, rather than men".

The Battle belongs to the Lord.

Is there any government of man strong enough to withstand His assault if He wants to do so ?

We worry too much about things which are absolutely not in our total control.

Last night I watched Primetime and it was scary how the elements can destroy this world if it went haywire, and if one were not Christian one would go to bed with goose bumps, and probably be lookin' out at the sky, or gobblin' up every news there was about Yellowstone, but, hey, God controls all these, and if He wants to let it break loose and all, who can say no ?

    The glory is God's.

Trust Him to protect His own, and to glorify His Word.

No, it doesn't. The government should stay out of the activities of consenting adults that do not interfere with the rights of others.

How do you figure. I still pay half of the money but my kids use none of it. So I am paying half for a product I am not useing.

I have no kids so I'm paying full price plus a portion of your share for a product I am not personally using, although public education is good for the general welfare of the nation.

Alright, where are the "strings" for welfare checks that support famiies? Can they, or can they not, give part of that money to a church, nullifying 'separation of church and state?' Where are the strings in welfare and food stamps that prevent them from being used for junk food? If it's in the government interest to reduce the obesity and lack of proper nutrition, especially in children, why are they not there?

Is there government regulation of private schools that get no public money at all? Yes, as in churches. A church or private school cannot be built without a building inspector approving the plans and facilities regarding exits, materials, and emergency warning systems. They cannot dump and burn their garbage anywhere on their own property, and in most communities cannot just put up wooden outhouses instead of having indoor plumbing. An institution need not accept public money to be under government regulation.

Your points are noted. But accepting tax money ups the ability of government to intrude.

    Are you kidding?

Technically, the money is supposed to go solely to the support of the family - food, clothes, rent, utilities, transportation - but it would be difficult to track if someone put a welfare dollar into the collection plate.

There is a specific, restrictive list of foods eligible for the WIC program.

Good food is generally more expensive.

They are not regulating the school or church as a school or a church but as a building - for the health and safety of everyone in the community.

You should get half back, just like me

We both dont use the system. Look at it like this. Out of the $6000, $3000 for educating our kids, $3000 for the good of society by having edumacated adults.

If you choose to not use the system by useing private, homeschool or not having kids you should get a refund of half.

OH, Alcott that is the best point I have heard on this subject to date.

When do I get to say what a welfare recipeante can do with his her life. If my tax money is making it possable to live, then I get a say in HOW they live.

I at the least want a say in what they buy.

*You know as well as everybody that the WIC money buys cheese while the other family money buys beer and cigarets.

*Not in every case but enough to make the generalization.

Why dont we get a say in everything these people do. Like what they teach their kids at home. OUR tax money supports their lives, we should have a say in how they live. RIGHT.

There is one giant difference between Vouchers and WIC money. I want my own money back because I pay taxes and just want a say in where my share goes. They are useing the money I put in.

actually a theocracy based on the Word of god would be a good thing. See what it did for this most powerful, charitable, wealthy nation in all of history, for it's first 200 years.
