George Orwell, if alive, would be crying....

Mr. Orwell tried his best; but it's fallen on deaf ears, and the UK has turned into the very thing he warned against.

Put CCTV in EVERY home: Householders should help us trap burglars, says Scotland Yard chief
Homeowners should consider fitting CCTV to trap burglars, the country's most senior police officer declared yesterday.
Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said police forces needed more crime scene footage to match against their 12million images of suspects and offenders.
And he called on families and businesses to install cameras at eye level – to exploit advances in facial recognition technology.

Saw this this morning. I think that you are right about Orwell being saddened.

I should be surprised, though I am not. Visit London, and note the number of CCTV cameras.

In the US, it really got going with Lieberman back around 2005-2007; but has expanded to license plate and sidewalk cameras.

Surveillance cameras in Boston helped with the marathon bombing; but the increase in surveillance cameras across the US, and especially in highly-populated areas, *should* be disturbing....

And it's only the beginning. Welcome to the technotronic era.

The technotronic era involves the gradual appearance of a more controlled society. Such a society would be dominated by an elite, unrestrained by traditional values. Soon it will be possible to assert almost continuous surveillance over every citizen and maintain up-to-date complete files containing even the most personal information about the citizen. These files will be subject to instantaneous retrieval by the authorities. Zbigniew Brzeziński

"unrestrained by traditional values" in this context means without values or principles, above and not accountable to the law.

Is this not how the "elite" are acting already? They claim the right to know every aspect of our daily lives while hiding their own dealings and doings behind firewalls like "national security" we dare not breach unless we are willing to spend the rest of our lives in prison or on the run.

Where'd all the "freedom" go? Better yet, who will stand up for it?
