God Fearing Christian

I was on another site not too long ago, and the question was posted, if God is loving and so good, why do Christians say that they are God fearing? Why would you fear something that was so great? My answer to the poster was, we fear him because he is so great. Fear of the Lord does not mean that we are afraid of Him. Fear of the Lord means that we respect Him, and honor His place in our lives. Does anybody else have a different answer for why we say we are God fearing Christians or anything to add?

Hi, there. I agree with you but if you're not a Baptist you per the rules ought not post here, but as a fellow new comer, it is just a friendly advisement.

I really do not understand how antinomian doctrine is valid in the least; a cursory reading of I John, Peter's epistles, Jude and James destroy this haphazard doctrine.

Has any other swallowed up into hell 250 men? Who has opened the heavenly windows; whose breath stokes the inferno of Hell? Do by the name of a man men rise up in life, or is it not JAH (Psalm 68) who is the giver & taker of life?

We have not arms like God, neither are able to say to the potter who hath formed the clay, Why hast thou made me thus?

Your answer is fine, and I also note that you are a Baptist.

The word 'fear' is a awesome fear that stands in awe of who God is. We fear for our own actions in response to an awesome, powerful, all-knowing, and holy God.

Of a popular hymn, O LORD my God by Stuart Hine, has an interesting insight in her lyrics.
O Lord my God! when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works Thy hand hath made
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed

And when I think that God His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die-I scarce can take it in
That on the cross my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home-what joy shall fill my heart!
Then shall I bow in humble adoration
And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!

When Israel beheld his God he fell down, the righteous seed, and builded and anointed him an altar to Jehovah.
Of the serpentine seed like Cain was Esau or Edom who was overmuch blest; yet of the stones of a pillar forbidden in Moses' law did he anoint and build.
When Job saw God, he repented in dust & ashes.
When Nathaniel beheld the King of Israel, said he,
Rabbi, thou art the Son of God: Thou art the King of Israel.
In the fifth of Luke, Peter rightly said,
Depart from me, for Thou art holy, & I am a sinner.
As the psalmist said the man whom God chooses to draw to him is blessed. Who are they who say otherwise? It is said,
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, they have done abominable iniquity, there is none that doeth good.

Fortunately for us, the Bible speaks of the fear of the Lord many, many times. Just go to biblegateway.com and click on your translation of choice and type in the words "fear Lord". You'll be surprised at how many times the bible speaks about this. I did a personal study on this once and I was amazed.

Here are the verses that help me to understand.

Proverbs 1:7“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

Why is fearing God going to start us on a path of wise living? To me, because of the following verses.

  1. Proverb 8:13“To fear the Lord is to hate evil – pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the perverse mouth.”
  2. Ecclesiates 12:13“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this [is] the whole [duty] of man.”
  3. Psalm 36:1 (quoted again in Romans 3:18) states that the problem with wicked people is that they don’t fear God at all.

Here’s a great commentary that helps to distinguish the spiritually healthy fear, the fear the bible speaks against, and meshing fearing the Lord with the passages where God says to “fear not”.

Actually she shows she is not only Baptist, but Methodist and Catholic. And her comments reflect more of the emergent church movement and not that of Evangelical Baptist. This is not a judgement, just an observation.

If she is not Baptist she should not be on this particular forum. The previous member has a point.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. In other words, to fear the Lord is a very wise thing to do. I don't believe this fear refers to dread, but it's talking about your heart being in a state of Revelation where you understand the greatness and terror of God in combination with God's love, and you respond to this with reverence and awe.

I don't know where you see that she is Methodist and Catholic. It does suggest next to "Denomination" Methodist and Catholic and she entered "baptist".

You are incorrect. She chose 'Baptist' as her denomination on her profile.

This is not the proper place moderatorial or administrative decisions. She labelled herself Baptist and even listed her local church. She is welcome to post here.

Now back to our discussion please.

The fear of the Lord is always treated as something positive in Scripture.
Acts 9:31. Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.'

If one is a Baptist-Methodist-Catholic there is a word for that: confused. The other indeed is emergent "a church is what it saith on the tin". If that is what this woman believes I have pity; but it would also mean the thread be moved possibly, and that is said in no whit of condemnation.

Why do the questions persist about this poster? Check her profile - she says she is a Baptist and a member of St Luke's Baptist Church. The question was a fair one and an excellent discussion starter.

Okay. It seemed valid to raise. Point taken.
As we said in the orchestra, low ready, up, play.

Hello, everyone. As a part of my daily reading I came across this little gem:
Surely his salvation is nigh to them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land.
Psalm 85.9.

It is very plausible that if a man has no fear of God could indicate a lack of salvation. The land who is inglourious to God, such as Israel was in Biblical times a backsliding like a heifer, and the crypto-Jew today, ref. Apocalypse 2.9, 3.9, Phillista, Sodoma, Edom, Tyre, & Sidion is filled with wrath, anger, indignation— and notably, no salvation. Consider the Nicolations who Jesus hated in Apocalypse against which stood the Ephesians.
