God's Restraining Grace

As we look around us at the blatant wickedness and immorality of the day, let us guard against the tendency to self-righteousness. If we have not been guilty of such things that shock our sensitivities, it is not because it is not natural to us or possible of us. We still have the nature of sin and the bent toward sinning. The only reason we have not done these things and worse is because of God’s restraining grace! We have no reason to boast but every reason to be thankful for His mercies to us! As one said, “There goes me but for the grace of God.”

It was John Rogers, one of the early English reformers, the first person to be burned at the stake in the reign of Queen Mary.
He saw a man being taken out to be hanged at Tyburn, London, he declared, "There, but for the grace of God, goes John Rogers."
