On Friday evening His burial was rushed and then the Sabbath starts. This makes two evenings and one morning so far. On Saturday morning the Sabbath continues so this makes two evening and two mornings so far. Then we have Saturday evening and our Lord remained in the tomb. This makes three evenings and two mornings so far. Then on Sunday morning our Lord was Raised from the dead. He rose from the grave. He wasresurrected. He is alive. This makes Him being under the authority of evil men three evening and three mornings.

He was three days and three nights in the heart of the earth, which was to be subject to sinful men. He is no longer my brethren. His alive. He is on the throne. He reigns and will forever more.

Saturday night (before Sunday morning) is Sunday.

The In the heart of the earth period starts at Jesus' incarceration, not his crucifixion. The giving over of Jesus began late Thursday night after sundown (the first part of Friday in Jewish thinking).

Thursday night (incarceration) 1st night
Friday day (crucifixion) 1st day
Friday night (tomb) 2nd night
Saturday day (tomb) 2nd day
Saturday night (tomb) 3rd night
Sunday day (tomb for a short time after sunrise) 3rd day

3 days and nights all represented. Friday crucifixion.

Mat 12:40

For as Jonas was three days and three nights in thewhale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

I understand. But we also have to count in accordance with Luke 24:20-21. If it weren't for the road to Emmaus account I think I'd be a slam-dunk Wednesdayer. It's that darned statement by Cleopas that keeps stumbling me.

I think I get both sides. Wednesdayers would rather explain away the counting of Cleopas while Fridayers would rather explain away the Johah analogy.

I have stated before I know, no Greek. Therefore one would have to check with the Greek guru members, on the board, as to the correctness of that part covering Luke 24.

Big assumption right there. Is that was Jesus meant by "heart of the earth." Entombment? I'm not so sure anymore.

Jesus, three days and three nights in the heart of the earth, not tomb

Three Days and Nights In The Heart of the Earth

Personally I believe it to men death. However the article shows the meaning of Luke 24 to be, that three days have completely passed and we still have not seen him, yet he was there with them.

See 24:7. The angle told the women that and the women toll the disciples what the angel had said which included the two disciples walking with Jesus.

The angel said, Jesus said he would be raised from the dead after three days and now those three days have passed. Where is he?

Indeed let's look at that verse.

Luke 24:7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’

Doesn't that verse specifically say Jesus was raised on the 3rd day after he was given into the hands of sinners and crucified? Does it not mention the giving over of Jesus to earthly authorities along with the crucifixion. And look at verses 20 and 21.

Luke 24:20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.

Here Cleopas says it's the 3rd day since all of these things happened, including handing Jesus over to earthly authorities. That handing over started on Thursday after Sundown (the first part of Friday in jewish thinking). In my mind, that's the missing night we've been looking for.

The Messiah said He would be in the heart of the earth for three nights. How does the night time arrest count as one of the three nights in the heart of the earth?

I would pose a similar question back to you. How does Jesus' time in the grave count as 'heart of the earth'? IOWs why do you believe 'heart of the earth' is a reference to the grave? We don't see that phrase used for grave anywhere else in Scripture. Under the earth would be a more appropriate term if that's what Jesus wanted to convey.

And how is Jonah's time in the whale a reference to the grave? Was he dead? Text doesn't say that. He was confined and imprisoned, but not dead.

One thing for sure, the crucifixion had to be Friday, and Sunday has to be the third day since the crucifixion. There are too many Scriptures that confirm this. But Christ, i suspicion, was speaking in broader terms when he was speaking of the sign of Jonah. He was talking about the time Christ offered himself to the earthly authorities. That lasted from Thursday night to the time he left the grave.
