    Quote from Gib:
I'm glad you used the word "Wholly" as some believe the one of God's names is "Holy" - and using it in the way you did - with the correct spelling - would be swearing. They base this on the following verse:

Isaiah 57:15 - For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

The KJV and the American Standard both capitalize the word "Holy" - the NIV does not. Any comment out there from you Hebrew scholars on this one?

    BIR,
No, it is generally accepted as a friendly way of showing concern. It's a generally nice thing to say. My only point is, that it would be better if, instead of saying "good luck", that you tell them that you believe in prayer and will pray for them about the situation. In your opinion, what better opens the door to convesation about God and allows for you to share your faith in God?

I am not saying that your testimony to the lost world is destroyed by saying "good luck", but it isn't strengthened, in any way, by doing so. Saying to them that you will pray for them does strengthen your testimony to the lost world. If you don't believe that, it is fine. I do, so I don't say "good luck".

I had to look up "innocuous". [IMG] Saying "good luck" is innocuous (having no ill effect or harmless). It doesn't hurt, but just isn't my choice of words for reasons I have "expressed to death". [IMG]
In one of my posts I said "I do think that this topic, which I started, isn't one of earth-shattering importance, more of a curiosity."

Thank you, BIR (and others), for sharing your opinion on the subject. I have enjoyed hearing various points-of-view. [IMG]

If you do not believe in luck, yet you wish someone good luck, isn't that a form of lying, you have misrepresented the truth of what you beleive.

THis also brings up another saying....When asked how one is, he/she sometimes reply, I'm good.

A woman lectured a high school boy about this, that only God is good that people are not good.

It is all in how we interpret the word.

Are you honestly trying to imply that saying "good luck" is the equivalent of lying?
Following this logic, saying "break a leg" to an actor (a well-established tradition) is the same as assault.

I can understand your point here; however, I have always believed that Isaiah was referring to the Name of God indirectly. I have always read to mean that he did not say His Name, but rather he referred to the One Whose Name is Holy.

Interesting point: I never saw this passage in that manner. Thanks for interjecting that thought.

When asked to pray about taking a test, etc. -- I will pray that God will help them remember the things they heard in class and the things that they have studied.

</font>[/QUOTE]Ok, first of all, I pray for my kids every day and will pray for any specific things they ask me to, including for them to do well on tests/school work. I realized after your reply, that you may have been left with the impression that I refused to pray for them in such matters which isn't the case at all. [IMG]

My point to my kids is that they have to put forth real effort in order to do well in school (or anywhere else for that matter). They can't expect to choose to play instead of study, and then pray and ask God to help them do well on the test. Their part is integrel. Would you agree? :D

To everyone else who thinks the phrase "good luck" is merely a harmless way of saying "I hope you do well", I can see your point. I don't envision them with their pockets full of tarot cards, magic crystals, and eye of newt because they said "good luck". I really don't! [IMG] :D

I don't correct people that I don't know well, when they use the phrase. I usually just smile and thank them. But if it's someone I know well, especially if I know they are a believer, I will usually say, in a friendly way, that there is no such thing as luck, only Gods blessings. [IMG] You see, to me luck is leaving things up to chance. But I believe that God wants us to rely on Him for the big stuff and the small stuff and so that's why I make sure (or try to) that I and my kids acknowledge Him in everything, down to the smallest thing, rather than leaving it up to chance. Make any sense?

So, is the image of me with a big wart on my nose and riding a broom whilst judging all the 'apostates' gone from most minds now? [IMG] :D [IMG]

Actualy, "Holy cow" is scriptural. Check out Exodus 32:8. [IMG]

I don't like saying "good luck" myself, but sometimes it is just out of habit.

A lost person may have luck on their side, but a saved person has God on their side and having God on your side is alot better odds that luck. Besides, a Christian acts on the will of God whether they know it or not.

    John,

Sometimes if a person doesn't jump zeolously on the band wagon, they will be trodden beneath it's wheels.

I understand that the term "Good Luck" isn't something that a Christian would say, but what would you substitute that phrase with? "Go with God"? "Be Blessed?" What? I really would like to know.

How does "luck" differ from "chance"? I've always thought of them as the same, but from the posts here, I'm obviously missing something.

I somehow think that wishing a person good luck is equivelant to saying:
    Have a Nice Day.
    I'm praying for you.
May the road rise up to meet you.
    God Bless You.
Via con Dios (Go with God)

It's all a way of wishing a person well. I believe the Bible calls it edifying each other.

Other than that it is just a colloquialism. Nothing more sinister than that.

    God Bless You,
    Charlotte

I don't say *good luck*,but it does not bother me for others to say it....I usually say,I'll be praying for you...or I hope it works out well for you. Or,we will be praying for God's will...

If it is sports,we always just say...do your best or good job. Keep at it...hope you win, etc. I just don't use the good luck phrase. to me,luck sounds like...maybe,by chance you may win...and we believe if you work hard at it,you can win...nothing is by chance.

If someone says good luck to me,it doesn't bother me a bit, though! ;)
