A leading Republican Party committeeman has joined the Minuteman border patrol, bringing new credibility to a group of volunteers labeled as "vigilantes” by President Bush.

Dr. Michael Vickers, the veterinarian who first identified the strain of anthrax later implicated in the killing of five people in 2001, said he joined the Minutemen because federal and state officials have failed to seriously address illegal immigration, the Washington Times reports.

"Over the past five years, the illegal-alien traffic has been horrendous,” said Vickers, who owns a ranch in south Texas.

"More than a thousand aliens pass through here every night. Our fences are being cut. Our homes and barns are being vandalized. Our families are frightened."

PS, I know it's NewsMax, but if this is false, it should've been easy for me to find out.....

Im curious why it is important to make the distinction that he identified the strain of anthrax. How does this even apply to his desire to be a border patrol agent? Perhaps he feels illegals are walking the deadly virus over the border?

Sounds more to me like he just wants to protect his home. Who doesnt?

I suppose he gains credibility by being a serious professional with ties to Big Gov.

Perhaps it's the means a person employs that marks him as a vigilante or not.

I believe a true "vigilante" acts as judge and jury and administers punishment.

The Minutemen do none of that. They simply observe and report.

They should have that right as private citizens anytime and anyplace.

Remember "Neighborhood Watch". Seems to me to be about the same thing.
