Starting to putz around with website design and want to go beyond the template driven cookie cutter "automatic" design sites out there. Is there a good place online for learning HTML? Perhaps a step-by-step learning experience?

You can learn a lot if you just go to a site and look it over then go to the menu of your browser and click on view source and see how they do it thought a step by step would be easier :)

Showing my age but a former FORTRAN and PASCAL programmer here. Yes, I've altered some web pages simply by following the format on existing pages and making changes. Half the battle is knowing the non-standard alpha characters and formats used to layout the HTML code.
