What a mixed up paragraph. Thanks for the good laugh this morning. Laughter is very beneficial for a person's health. Thanks again.

Yeah. Huhhhhhhhhhhhh!-- huhhhhhh!-huhhh!

Congress can fix the problem without cutting benefits.

Exactly how?

The GOP simply does not care about the poor and elderly. You are younger than I so you will have to live with it much longer. Have fun.

I ain't gonna have much fun no matter what. And Congress in the late 70's raised the age at which I can get full benefits; for me, it went up from 65 to 66 years and 4 months. I've always thought that was reasonable. It should be determined how many people how many reached 65 in 1935, and let that fraction determine the age at which full benefits are available today. The idea of seeing 75-year-olds out riding bicycles and jogging and doing full gym workouts while receiving full SS benefits! Is SS for those unable to work, by disability brought on by age or handicap, or is it a forced one-way contract for which those who get the most out of it are the least likely to need it?

Oh, and on elections. The good folk in Texas who elected Johnson have an affect your your life. You can thank them.

"Affect" is a verb. And if you think it's a laugh that he was a prisoner in such conditions for those years and that affects his thinking today, that just reemphasizes the fact that you're a clown here.

Well, I do enjoy a good laugh.

Now, how do you feel about cutting Social Security benefits and raising the retirement age?

Crabby - you are asking 2 separate questions.
1) benefits are not being cut - they are being changed.

2) raising the retirement age. - When the SS act was passed the average life expentancy was between 60-65.
The 21st Century now sees a life expancty of about 80.

In addition, with better medical advancements - many are able to work past the age of 65

In addition - SS was never meant to be 100% of your retirement. Think the 3 legged stool metaphor

Now there is one change I do like - the new Military retirement. Begining on 1 Jan 18 - all new recruits will be enrolled in the Blended Retirement System. (others may enrol if they wish).
Under this program - GI's will contribute about 5% of their pay - and the military will also make a contribution. Gone will be the old days of 50% retirement of your final pay.
Since there’s a 83% chance a GI won’t make 20 years the new plan offers many monetary benefits to those who get out before their 20 years.

Sometimes - changes need to be made.

Crabby - you were in the Army - back in the day. Your pay was not that great - ( I joined in 1970 and my first monthly pay was $124.50 - and that was before any deductions. I beleive you got out before I enlisted - thus you net pay was probably really gross!.
So with a small pay - a generous retirement system was given.
Now, a GI makes a decent living, not only with Basic pay, but with all the allowances, and ect.

Salty if you receive less money the benefit has been cut.

Seems silly to me to project to 2050. The world for those in the BB who are alive then will be so different from now. I won't be there to see it. I do not know how Johnson's formula plays out from now to 2050.

I agree. I was not asking about the merits of raising the retirement age. I was curious to know what the younger folk on the BB feel about having their age of retirement raised.

I do not remember what my pay was when I entered the Army in 1960. It was well below $100 a month. But, of course, that was back in the day when a soft drink and a candy bar cost all of ten cents. I remember McDonald's ads saying, a hamburger, french fries and a coke for less than $1.00. Even with that kind of pay I was able to go on leave to Denmark and then to Switzerland while stationed in Germany.

I do remember having to file an income tax return, but cannot remember any specifics. I have all my 1040's from after I was discharged from the Army in 1962 to now, but not those from 1960-62 while in the Army.

In 1964 I started my first job as the librarian in an elementary school. I made all of $3,500 a year and lived by using the envelope method. An envelope for each week. $20.00 for groceries and a few dollars for other items. Never used a credit card back then, knew it was not a smart thing to do. Paid cash, $250.00 for my first car, a 1954 Ford Fairlane. Was a good car.

I knew you were a good man. The liking of Mountain Dew was the first indicator. ;)

On income tax returns, I keep backup data for 7 years ... 1040's forever.

I would like a reference that says the head of the GOP is going to cut SS benefits.

There's not one. There never is. It's the same old scare tactic democrats have been using for decades. "Republicans are going to cut social security!" Blah blah blah

They never do.

Lol. That's what the Dem's say every time they lose an election. And it's never true.

But it wouldn't be bad news to me. SS should be phased out completely. You start by cutting it.
