I just lost two bulldogs....both in the same week. Heartbroken so the wife brought home another one. That helped.

My wife and I are animal lover's with a bias toward dogs. We currently have three, Papillion, Malt-Poo and Chihuhua mix.
We lost a very precious pet (Chloe) suddenly and unexpectedly to a seizure. Our hearts were broken for several years.
We do understand the emptiness and hurt as we have lived it.
Blessings. Time will soften the pain.

We often worried about gates being left open....my wife constantly reminds me when I do yard work to be certain to close and lock the gates before I let the dogs into the backyard. We keep them locked to prevent any neighborhood miscreants from opening them.

This is so our life. 
Been there a few times. Our last one was the toughest and made worse that I had to make the decision that she had had enough.
EWF suggested getting another. Might be worth thinking about.

We had an old cocker spaniel as a family dog in years gone by.
Since I'm handicapped & my condo is very small + my HOA/property mngmt co charges rather steep additional fee(s) for pets, I don't have any.
If I HAD to choose, I'd probably choose a dog rather than a cat, although I'm sure my sisters most likely would have a different set of ideas about that.

What was it like to have one as your friend? What was his personality like?
We have a basenji mix. A girl. She is around 6, the vet thinks (rescue, so unknown) and very funny. She gets really excited about treats and will start tearing through the house sometimes if you say that word, except she bounces off furniture she passes on the way, does complete flips, etc. I never saw a dog her size do flips before. It is very entertaining!

My bloodhound was very large for that breed 160 lbs. when my grandson was smaller he would try to ride him like a horse, Fred (the dogs name) would go along for awhile then he would knock him off and sit on him so he couldn't get up. The only time he every bit anyone was when he got hit by the car and he bit me while trying to get him in the car to go to the vet, his back was broken in 2 places. very smart sit or lay down when told unless he was on a scent then there was no stopping him. boy do I miss him

Sorry to hear about your bloodhound. Its been about 10 years since I lost mine. She was bad to roam as well. She went for a stroll one day to the neighbor's farm and I believe she was poisoned (accidentally or intentionally I'm not sure) regardless we had to personally put her down which was a hard thing to do. I've got two great pyrenees now, up until about 6 months ago they would stay in their fenced area, but started getting loose and running down to the highway. One was gone 2 days and I thought we'd never get her back. Keep em tied up now, hate to do it, but I don't want to lose them.
Right now we just have a bunny because my hubby is allergic to animals but I also take care of a few horses for friends.
Many posters on this board should have a rabbit.

Pets: two dogs.
Animals: 8 rabbits, 21 chickens, 15 chicks we just picked up last week, 5 ducks, 3 calves (1 is ready for slaughter, the other 2 are about 6 months old), and 3 cats that hang out and my wife feeds once in a while.
Then there's the raccoons, possums, coyotes, bobcats, occasional mountain lion, deer, skunks, snakes, stray cats and the wild dogs people drop off down by the cemetery....
Pets: two dogs.

With the price of beef the way it is, I'm seriously considering finding someplace where I can buy a cow and have it slaughtered for us. My friend who owns the horse that I've been riding for 10 years just bought a horse retirement farm and across the street is a guy who raises beef cows. When we finally move their horses up to the new place, I'm going to go with them and approach the cattle farmer and see if he sells individual cows. I'm just sick of paying absolutely ridiculous prices for junk beef!
My brother split one with a friend once, same scenario. My brother picked out a calf, the guy tagged it, and separated regularly it for to feed it better.
