Just got diagnosed with gouty arthritis. I've never felt pain as bad as an attack in the ankles.

Anyone else suffer from this ? What helps ?

I don't personally know what helps, but there was a short article in our paper today by a medical doctor on the benefits of turmeric. HERE is something I randomly found online about it.

I pray that you find some relief.

Allopurinol in the amount of 300 mg is what I now take everyday to keep the gout away. Yes, a gout attack is very painful and mine usually manifested itself on the ball of my foot and along the side.

To deal with an attack I use the older medicine called colchicine. A massive dose was needed to take care of a gout attack and the side effects was extreme nausea, but I always gladly dealt with the nausea in order to stop the massive pain the gout caused. Thankfully it's been several years since I have had an outbreak. Good luck!

Lots of fresh vegetables and healthy proteins and fats. Lay off pork and carbs.

Mine is a problem due to trauma. When I bump a knee, or twist an anke, it will develop into an unbearable pain in whatever joint is affected. The pain seldom lasts more than three days Yes, diet could help but not eliminate this. I do eat pretty healthy, 6' tall, 189 lbs, bp is 117 over 72.

Been some great responses. Got an appointment with a specialist in august. Meanwhile going to try turmeric. I'm up to two attacks a month so I'll know if it helps really soon.

Hi ~ ooooh, sorry to hear of your issue.

Perhaps this article will give you some insight to the cause and remedies that may be helpful for you, in addition to any meds that may be prescribed for you.

As I said before, the colchicine did the trick.
I too took colchicine about 15 years ago. You are right. It works well, but gave me terrible stomach problems including terrible intestinal cramps and very loose bowels.

But the pain was worse than the side effects, so, . . .

An adjustment of my diet seems to have prevented any recurrence. :)

Do you enjoy a bacon cheeseburger or a pizza once in a while ? High end kettle potato chips ? A grilled tuna fish sammich ? These are a few of my favorite things. Gonna be hard to cut them out.

I enjoy all of that. And refrain from eating them. :)

Yes, changing one's diet can help. Like I said before, a daily dose of allopurinol has kept mine at bay. Gout is caused by high uric acid in the system. I thank God we live in this day and age and have medications that work. I understand Founding Father Ben Franklin had the same affliction.

I really do appreciate all of that. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, if I had enemies.

Doc's just changed me to allopurinol and celecoxib, so I don't know how these will work out. But I'm starting to feel old. :Frown

Old illustration of gout. I have read that it is the worst pain a person can have.

The Gout, James Gilray, 1799.

Gout runs in my family, me, my younger brother, and Dad all have bouts of it. It's odd, it began in all of our left 'great toe', and then to other joints.

Dad and I are sold on the efficacy of BEET KVASS in minimizing gout episodes to the point that neither one of us take allopurinol any more. It's the beets themselves that contain five specific salts that act as blood alkalizers that helps keep the uric acid that causes the gout neutralized.

It's an old Ukrainian/Eastern European lacto-fermented infusion of chopped raw beets, salt (non-iodized; a staggered ferment greatly minimizes the sodium content to insignificant), sugar (the lactobacilli converts it all to lactic acid), water (non-chlorinated), and whey from yogurt as an inoculant. It makes a superb after dinner drink, aids the digestion, and keeps the gout at bay, for the most part. I make five gallon batches at a time and several in my family enjoy it regularly. It makes a good breakfast 'spritz' also, used it in salad dressing, and have cooked with it before (but it's no longer 'live food' then).

As far as diet goes, it's starchy foods that gives me the most problems. If I drink plenty of water and maintain a basically lo-carb diet I don't have many severe flare-ups. But I'm prone to wander every now and then. :)
