Grammer and spelling in Posts on a Forum

I agree Matt, it annoys me tremendously....I itch for a virtual red pen to make corrections. People who claim to be dyslexic are annoying as there is a spell checker available in most cases. I suspect one should be more tolerant of folk who reply in English when their first language is not English.
Then again I certainly would never win prizes in grammer and parsing.:laugh:

One thing to keep in mind is that even within the the English speaking world, there is a difference in spelling and grammar, and even within the US there are regional differences. I'm sure England and "Down Under" has similar circumstances.
As far as spell check - I do use it, but sometimes I am in a rush ( ie leaving for work, ect) and I may inveterately hit the first choice from spell check but it may not be the bet choice.

It shouldn't be important, provided that the meaning is right. After all, there are many reasons why grammar or spelling might be (or seem) bad to a reader. Here are a few:
Geographical differences Here in the UK, if I wrote "I paid by check", "I love the Savior", "I've gotten me a new computer" or "He read pages one through ten", I would be making mistakes, just as (I imagine) Americans would be making mistakes if they wrote "I paid by cheque", "I love the Saviour", "I've got a new computer" or "He read pages one to ten".
Posters for whom English is not their first language.
Posters who have dyslexia.
Posters who make a mistake, but only notice it when the period of time allowed for editing has finished. (When I look back at some of my previous BB messages, I am ashamed of some of the spelling.)
I think it would be wrong to assume that every time we see what we consider to be a mistake in grammar or spelling, it must be a result of carelessness. In many cases it isn't!

My biggest pet peeve is when certain people on here call me ignorant they say "your ignorant".

I don't worry too much just because I do not know the whole situation of the person behind the screen. I had a good lesson in this one day when I was getting annoyed at a friend of my daughter's on Facebook and I finally called her in the room and said "What is this with your friend and her grammar?" and I started to read her reply to my daughter. As soon as I did, it hit me - she was deaf. Yes, she was replying like an uneducated teen on a cell phone but she was a deaf person who does not speak English. It was humbling.
Not everyone has had a great education. Not everyone can type well. Not everyone has a working keyboard. Some people (like me) are on some medication that actually affects their ability to function (and are now coming off that medication - Topamax - because of that bad side effect). Some people live in other areas of the world and some people have ESL. So I give them grace.

Well good for you John! You have succeeded in slandering two Christian brethren in one shot. Take a bow.
Or perhaps what stops Brother Rippon from regularly posting is his current missionary post in Communist China where he is now serving. They are constantly monitoring his activities for signs of trying to spread the gospel & he could be put in prison for the least infraction. JF is the least of Rippon's worries. :laugh::laugh:

Lord willing, it will soon be 50 years since I studied "English" in college. Even more years, since basic grammar and spelling were studied. With regards to spelling, age is catching up with me. I can't remember how to spell words, now, the way I once did. If the need for more formality, than is conveyed by conversational English exists, I'll fire up a word processor and run the document through the checks and balances. All the while hoping that it "knows" what I'm trying to express to the reader.
That said, I'm saddened by people being so critical about such things when it's out of context. If this were an English professor's forum, I could understand. However, the focus of this forum is about our Creator. Instead of being critical about the uneducated, under educated, folks who can't remember, shouldn't we be accepting of them who seek the Lord?
Due to circumstances beyond his control, as a child, my father couldn't read or sign his name. One glorious day, I'll see my father again, in heaven. There he won't be ridiculed because he didn't know how to properly construct a sentence or spell "grammar".
I'm with Jim on this one------some just flat out dont know how to tipe!!!
I don't waste my time trying to read posts that are filled with misspelled words, improper grammar, and punctuation that is so bad that it is impossible to read. A long post with such writing that is all one paragraph is boring at best. Add the fact that some people don't use periods, commas, apostrophes, or other necessary punctuation, or capitalize the first letter of a new sentence (when it's even possible to tell where one sentence ends and the next one begins), and that makes for some very impossible reading.
