Gwen Moore: ‘I Don’t Think We Do Children A Favor By Forcing Women To Give Birth’

Democratic Wisconsin Rep. Gwen Moore is continuing her push to keep Planned Parenthood funded, claiming reallocating the funds to other healthcare organizations that don’t perform abortions wouldn’t be an adequate option.

At a press conference held by the Congressional Black Caucus Monday, Moore said due to the length of time women are fertile throughout their lives, it can be difficult preventing pregnancy.

“That is a lot of time to prevent pregnancies, and it’s hard for me to believe that any woman would want to be pregnant every year for 35 years,” she said. “So women have been desperately in need for this healthcare remedy, which is why it has been such a strenuous effort to provide this life saving benefit to women.”

While Planned Parenthood receives close to half a billion dollars a year in federal funds, Moore says due to the Hyde Amendment none of that money goes toward abortions. Critics say the money indirectly funds the cause because money provided by private donors could be used for women’s healthcare instead of the procedure.

Planned Parenthood has recently come under fire after a series of videos allegedly showing doctors discussing selling fetal body parts for profit. Republican legislatures have since pushed to defund the organization, some even at the cost of a government shutdown.

Moore also said many women with unintended pregnancies carry out full-terms because they can’t afford the service.

“It has all kinds of implications on a family — not just financial, but emotional, social and the ability of a family to provide for their children really relies on that family being able to decide when and how many children and if they will have any children at all,” she said. “I don’t think we do children a favor by forcing women to give birth.”

HUH? Since when is murder a "healthcare remedy" and a "life saving benefit"?

Why don't evangelicals spend more time ministering to these young ladies and loving on them as opposed to spending so much energy on Planned Parenthood? And don't followup with the lie that we can do both. If we could and were, there wouldn't STILL be so many ladies going in for abortions.

If women want to get an abortion, they will figure out a way to do so. But if you lead someone to letting Christ change their hearts, the abortion services of places like PP will go away.

Focus on the real issue.

Will the million women seeking abortion services every year be saved if we give them the gospel? Most likely not. I agree that changed hearts are needed - but we still can work towards eliminating evil that should not be allowed to continue. We CAN do both - minister to those young ladies who will be ministered to and fight the lies of Planned Parenthood.

There are two very real issues. One is everyone lost needs the gospel. Two there are hundreds of thousands of unborn children being slaughtered in the womb right not everyday. Neither should be ignored. Neither should be focused on to the exclusion of the other. The lives of unborn children are under imminent threat right now, every minute, and in need of intervention.

There are women and girls who get abortions AFTER they are saved - abortion isn't a "lost girl's" issue.

Why? Because - sometimes - they are backed into a corner and abandoned by the fathers, kicked out of the house by the parents, and coaxed into the abortion by the doctors. That's the real world of which I have been witnessed to too many times.

Planned Parenthood should be fought against with every spiritual ounce the believer has.

And to prevent these things from happening - yes, the gospel should be presented and also Christians need to teach and practice many things.

  • Stop pretending like young people don't have sex just because you drag them to church every Sunday.
  • Stop this inane belief that as long as YOU don't talk to your sons and daughters about sex, pregnancy, and abortion that it won't happen in your house.
  • Stop the useless traditions of purity balls and purity rings which only mean something to the parents and the church - not the teenagers. Purity rings/balls/pledges don't make young people abstain. Young people abstain because their parents/leaders teach them (not force upon them) Godly principals and they believe them and thankfully choose for themselves to abide by them.
  • Stop pretending that your house is a perfect house and insinuating that no one can live in your house if they make a mistake. Your children should know that your house is the FIRST place that they should run to if they are in trouble and that you are the safest person for them to run to. They won't know that if you never tell them that.
Christians HAVE to aim Godly principals at the base of the flame - the young people when they are young and teaching them the truth and having conversations early and OFTEN.

Christians also have to aim Godly principals at the raging flame, itself - Planned Parenthood, etc.

It's not an either/or situation.

I don't know. I can't say most likely not because the God I serve is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.

Perhaps he's just waiting for us to start acting like the church and going after the hearts and souls of people instead of expending so much energy going after organizations like Planned Parenthood.

I keep saying this because it's obvious that a lot of folks in the church don't get it. Do the work that Jesus has left us here to do. Preach the Gospel and make disciples of men.

That's how you fight Planned Parenthood. That's how you fight some 300,000 abortions per year.

Stop giving PP federal dollars and they'll get them from somewhere else.

We were left here to battle the enemy. If you can see it, it's not your enemy.
start praying against this wicked spirit of Baal that has a stronghold on so many in that organization. Start praying for the girls and women who may be considering an abortion, and that God places them in our paths so that we may minister to them that there is another way that is Righteous. Start praying for the board of PP. Start praying for the administrators and management of this organization that Jesus Christ would break the yoke that binds them.

The governemnt can only do what medical doctors tend to do. They can fix symptoms. That's what will happen if the federal dollars are taken back.

But the Great Physician gives a Way that will stop the abortions all together. We, as the Church, have to learn how to wield the power that God has given us to fight the enemy.

You're not gonna do that by taking away federal dollars. That's the fleshly, political way of putting a band-aid on it. This problem is spiritual and must be fought in the spirit.

You haven't been tasked of GOD as His follower to do both. we are not to be double minded thinking we can fix things His way while pursuing our own way just in case His way doesn't produce the desired effect as quickly as we desire.

I wasn't saying it was because there are indeed a whole lot of saved women getting abortions and a whole lot of saved men pushing them to do so. The point again is that when you disciple people and minister to them that the Holy Spirit will enable them to make wise decisions that come from above instead of them using wisdom that comes from the devil.

Same here. But the answer is STILL Jesus and the overflow of His love demonstrated by His followers.

Why aren't there more church led hotlines 24/7 to deal with these things? I praise God that I've received calls at all hours of the day and night because people know that I will take the time to listen and minister to them.

As with discipling people, the church has to make itself available to deal with these situations. Because if we don't, the enemy will be waiting to move into the vacuum and present the WRONG way.

Absolutely. And if that includes praying that God allow Congress to take away the federal dollars, hallelujah. But that AGAIN, is a band-aid.

The raging flame IS NOT Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is a political scapegoat that will enable a lot of Christians to not do what we're supposed to do because we've taken federal dollars from PP.

It shouldn't be. The Way of Christ should be the way it is fought. We just stupidly continue to put more focus on doing it the fleshly way than doing it the spiritual way.

I certainly hope you're right there. It's important to see where Gwen is coming from - rape victim in her youth, former welfare recipient, her grown son was the guy that slashed Republicans tires and got caught about ten years ago. All this really skews her outlook on abortion - for example, in 2011 when the Pence amendment was up to defund PP, someone gave her the eugenics argument and she said that was because black women were poorer than white women, so they had more abortions. Circular argument at the very least.

And I can hear folks saying that you Christians are a bunch of hypocrites. You talk a big game about having faith in God, but when the going gets tough , you want to be your own god.

Perhaps if Christians had been praying the way that they should have, the Nazi regime never would have taken off.

But I suspect that a lot of Christians back then were much the same as they are today and during slavery where they just stuck their heads in the ground and pretended nothing was happening. :rolleyes:

If it had been millions of nothing but gay people or Muslims killed, the lot of ya would be applauding it as God's judgment.
