Hair Length: Some Resist, Others Obey

Community abuzz over short hair standards some local religious leaders are imposing
“I was laughing that he would think hair length has a connection to spirituality,” said Sash
“Some customers tell me we have to cut it short enough ‘so I don’t get in trouble,’” said [stylist] Galit Lavi....She has seen a recent uptick in this happening with young mothers who have kids entering school. “Of course it’s hard for them — it’s a sacrifice. They like the longer hair,” said Lavi....“I hear it all the time.”

That video cracked me up and brought back memories of the hair and skirt police from the church of my youth.

If a boy's hair was resting on or over the ear and/or was resting on or over the collar they couldn't sing in the youth choir and were considered to be in rebellion to God.

Likewise, if the girls skirts were more than 1 1/2 inches above the knee when they kneeled on the floor they could not sing in the choir and were rebellious. And, yes, they did have a ruler and they did measure.

I remember the nuns putting girls on a chair, standing up for the entire class on display & then would measure with a ruler the length to the knee. This was the typical shame & blame routine designed to humiliate

Back in the Beatles era, the High School wouldn't allow a guy's hair to touch his ears or collar. This resulted in massive slabs of grease, 50s style jellyroll hairdos, and duck tails protruding out the back of the head. That was OK, but the Beatles thing, modest by today's standards was not.

FALWELL FLASHBACK

Newspaper article from 1975:

hair.jpg

"LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Dr. Jerry Falwell drew a thunderous 'Amen' from 3,000 listeners at the 1975 Southwide Baptist Fellowship Conference with a resounding sermon on what he said were the excesses and decadence of modern society. Among the targets of the 42 year-old television preacher's wrath: 'Tobacco, music, hair, theater, Hollywood, dancing, television, sex, the whole new morality. All of these are examples of carnality,' said Falwell pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church, Lynchburg, Va. 'We’ve got to be preaching against these sins We’re the only ones out there who can do it” Even evangelist Billy Graham, Falwell said, could use a haircut. 'I watched Billy Graham's televised West Texas Crusade last week,' he said. 'Billy was preaching a good sermon, but I didn't hear a word he said. His hair, down his back—turned up in a curl. Ugh.' Among the other speakers Tuesday were Dr Jack Hyles, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Hammond, Ind., Dr Lee Roberson, pastor of Highland Park Baptist Church, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Dr Al Janney, pastor of the New Testament Baptist Church in Miami, Fla. The three day meeting of Independent Baptist pastors and laymen from across the United States ends today."

I think this mindset drove many away from Baptists Churches into the grip of Pentecostalism. The Pentecostal churches were crawling with hippie types and were glad to have them.

Nutjobs....but yet the evangelicals followed him. Did they allow for you to go to a medical doctor or did they insist on praying over you?

From my experience, the Pentecostals were typically Arminiain. Preaching the same gospel most Baptist churches preach. Also baptizing believers by immersion. They substituted the old "asking Jesus into your heart" with "asking for the Holy Spirit" thinking it was the baptism of the Holy Spirit. But they attracted many from the "Jesus Movement" with rock worship services and Adrenalin driven praise and worship.

I didn't know it was sin that made hair grow.
Yeah, goes back all the way to Adam. Little known fact the fruit of the Tree of Life was packed with natural dipilatory agents. Once Adam sinned he was denied access to the Tree of Life and, yeah, the hair grew. This sin trait was passed on to all humans. This is why Alopecian monks have bald heads.

AND Heaven forbid, if you had a beard!
Back in 87, I visited a IFB down in Lake City, Ga. Big sign on the door "Ladies, please wear dresses or skirts"

Just checked - cant seem to find a web page for them -
and they (at the time -they were running at least around 400 people)

I kind of miss those days. Now I walk in church and half the men wearing shorts and half the women dressed like they are going out bar hopping. No reverence whatsoever. I am lax on dress appropriateness, but ridiculous is ridiculous. I sit there having Al Bundy moments when I see most of the women. They should be 20 years younger and 40 pounds lighter to be wearing what they wear. If your fat hangs over it, you shouldn't be in it. You shouldn't be in it anyway at church and probably anywhere for that matter.

Reminds me, I need a haircut. Great Clips opens in 7 hours and two minutes.

I have been carrying around the hair cut money in my wallet for two weeks now.

Gotta get my hair cut tomorrow!
