So depending on who wins, this is either the beginning of the end of Trump's presidency, or not really a big deal at all.

Not really a big deal at all has the edge, right now.

Any predictions ?

A non-event. Strong Republican district. And Ossoff doesn't even live in the district!

Yeah, looks like this Handel is going to win by a few percentage points. I was interested because before I had heard the "referendum on Trump" talk but when I was in Atlanta, I never saw an anti-Trump commercial by either candidate. Handel claimed Osshoff had "San Francisco values" and Osshoff tried to come off as some budget-cutting crusader.

My impression was not that Trump was so unpopular since he won the district so narrowly but that this district was homebase for the neverTrumpers the whole time.

The liberal news media has convinced everyone this is a strong Republican district put into play because of Trump being unpopular. This district is not strongly Republican. It is always hotly contested. It has been hotly contested for well over 20 years.

The liberal news media? Really?

This district is strongly Republican. Some years the Democrats don't even bother to run a candidate. The last time a Democrat was elected here was in 1976.

Here are the results of the Congressional races since 2000. Basically Republican landslides every year, except for Trump in 2016:

2000
Republican 75%
Democrat 25%

2002
Republican 80%
Democrat 20%

2004
Republican 100%
Democrat--no candidate

2006
Republican 72%
Democrat 27%

2008
Republican 68%
Democrat 31%

2010
Republican 99.9%
Democrat--no candidate (write in candidate got 0.1%)

2012
Republican 65%
Democrat 35%

2014
Republican 66%
Democrat 34%

2016
Republican 62%
Democrat 38%

In addition the district went this way in recent Presidential elections:
2004 Bush +41%
2008 McCain +18%
2012 Romney +23%
2016 Trump +1.5%

Over and over again because of the so-called close polls just about everyone media was predicting a close race some commentators (even on Fox) saying a recount would probably be necessary.

Handel won by six percentage points in spite of the rigged polls.

Cook had it at R+8 but look at this:

Year Office Results
2000 President George W. Bush 68% - Al Gore 32%
2004 President George W. Bush 70% - John Kerry 29%
2008 President John McCain 62% - Barack Obama 37%
2012 President Mitt Romney 61% - Barack Obama 38%
2016 President Donald Trump 48% - Hillary Clinton 47%

Trump REALLY under performed there last year but the Democrats read the motivation for that all wrong. They are 0 for 4 in these "special elections", another indicator that they won't do well next fall unless things change and change fast.

How is he able to run to represent a district in which he doesn't live??

The U.S. Constitution requires only that a candidate be at least 25 years old and be an inhabitant of the state. The Supreme Court has struck down state attempts to make candidacy requirements more restrictive than those set out in the Constitution.

Democrats could have fed 7.8 million hungry kids a free lunch for the money they WASTED on this race. Could it be their cries of support for the little man are less than genuine ? (based on a $3.00 price tag)

They say that the money came from Hollywood, Silicon Valley and Martha's Vineyard but it just wasn't enough money to elect the Democrat in this case. Bro. Curtis, you sure are right that the Dems weren't thinking of the children in this instance....

When I read this while waiting for the Liquid Sunshine to brew, I first thought that this thread was about David Hasselhoff. Ugh...

Sometimes I wounder how much democratic societies as a whole could improve if we spent all the money we spend on elections into actually solving the problems these folks are elected to solve.
