It is what it is

That is one good thing with the media attention, many of our concerns are validated and others can be dismissed. But we will never know what happens behind closed doors, especially with a family so isolated.

 

I hope they have more interaction with the rest of the world than it appears. Or that I understand.
The more interaction with the world, the more the younger kids will want to play with others. This means they
will be told no because they must stay home to raise their siblings. There is no incentive for the parents to socialize their kids, even at church.
Because if they attended church, they may meet kids whom they want to spend time with.

The worst cases of child abuse occur when the children are more isolated.

If this show is available on Netflix, I would like to order it though we usually stay away from reality tv. We broke the mold and watched Little People Big World which was very good. I saw about a 5-10 min portion of the Osbournes once too, that was pretty good.

 

Ok. Unless it's available on Netflix, then I can't watch it either. We don't have cable, satellite or even regular television. We only watch movies.

Another concern of mine is we need to know what they are showing is not necessarily reality. Pat Boone lived next door to the Obsbournes and he said he never heard them swear or talk like that when he was at their home.

Here's an interview with Aimee Osbourne, I'll assume you know the Osbournes already. She says her family only changed into that way of life in the last few years, sounding almost like around the time they started the show. Her mother was strict prior, their potty mouth seemed to come about the time to tape the show. The swearing and vulgarity makes for good television. Only Ozzy seems real, as I believe he would never "act" for television like the others.

Also note in the interview, Aimee Osbourne was pressured by her Mother to join the Osbournes reality tv show. She states she enjoyes her privacy so stuck to her guns.
If you see ALL of 18 of these Duggar kids on the reality show, you pretty much know they were likely pressured imo

It seems this family is using their children to attain some degree of fame or notoriety. When they crave a little more time in the spotlight..get pregnant again.

Nope. Did you see them on NBC's Today? This family getting pregnant is becoming an annual media event. Kind of like Groundhog Day. If the baby comes out and sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of pregnancy!

A few thoughts..

WHy is public school an issue? I for one will certainly not be sending my kids to a public school if I can help it!!!! Homeschooling has really nothing to do with lazyness at all. Unschooling maybe does, but I dont think homeschooling is for the lazy mom. Thats for sure.

Secondly.. I did not ever hear that Michelle weans her babies at 6 months so that her fertility will return. That is a little odd.

It also is sad that they have a sign up sheet for kids who need one on one time with mom and dad. However, even with that fact, something tells me that these kids are getting much more time with their parents than most normal kids.

My friend, a mom of 10 (WONDERFUL CHILDREN who love their parents and the Lord. The adult children plan on raising their own kids exactly the same way) tells me that in a really large family, the dynamic is really different. She gets one on one time with each of her kids throughout the day as they live at home. If mom needs to go to the store, she'll grab a kid who hasnt gone in a while. If a kid needs to talk to mom, she always makes herself available right then. Remember, homeschooling means more time together period, so there are more chances for one on one time with their children just because of lifestyle. Homeschooling can be absolutely wonderful!

Now Im certainly not saying that everything they do is right. I dont think that actually. From what I understand, they are Bill Gothard followers (as are many quiverfull folks) and I certainly do not like the sounds of what Bill Gothard teaches. It seems to me that many many people who follow Bill Gothard also homechurch because they believe that most churches have gotten too worldly and too anti-family.

But I also think that JimBob and Michelle are doing a fine job handling their 17 kids. Probably better than most parents do handling their 2-3. They also are handling their money better than most. Im not sure how we can call them bad stewards when they live completely debt free. (for what its worth, my friend the mom of 10 lives debt free as well and they also bought a 7000sq foot home debt free. )
