Has the KJVO movement Hijacked the IFB

My wife and I visited an IFB church here in the area, and we were looked at and treated as if we were unknowledgable in the things of the Lord...unsaved. The reason given? I have long hair and a beard, and my wife wore dress slacks and a jacket to THEIR (funny, I thought it was the Lord's) church. They weren't friendly in any form, and when the pastor talked to us as we were going out he wanted to talk to us. I talked to him while my wife went to get the car. I knew what he wanted to talk about, so I started the conversation "Well, preacher, I used to be an assistant pastor and interim pastor and lay preacher for IFB churches like this one. But, I became disabled with an inner ear disease in both ears and was forced from active ministry." He looked shocked and stated that he had thought I was unsaved because I looked more like a rocker than a Christian. Yep...man judges from the outward appearance...God judges from the heart. I told him that as I walked away toward the car where my wife was waiting. We never went back. He's called a few times, never apologized, and I won't go back to THEIR church. It's a shame it's not the Lords work being done there. I can see why attendance has dwindled.

It's a good thing they are all in the same place so they can't cause damage and division any where else.

Amen to that. Most of the church is now the pastor's relatives that have moved in from out of state.

Are they setting camp to teach yoga too?

I'm sorry that you, too, felt that way about that particular church. I know my wife and I and our then foster sons were treated like dirt by that particular church, and when my brother and his wife separated the pastor did absolutely nothing to try and help counsel them to help save their marriage, which was pretty much salvagable by that time had he taken the initiative with my brother. My brother, by the way, lived right across the street and up one house from the pastor.

Only one of hundreds of similar stories that are coming from that church now. It is so sad to see what is happening to that church.

I am so sorry that you and your family had to go through that.

If some of the churches spent as much time and energy wining people to Christ as they do running them off those churches would be overflowing.

My pastor is a graduate of PCC, and when he was candidating at our church, my one question for him was on the KJV issue. He made it clear then and continues to do that he is not in the KJVO camp. In fact, he is co-author of two books on the subject that refute the KJV Only position: From the Mind of God to the Mind of Man: A Layman's Guide to How We Got Our Bible and God's Word in Our Hands: The Bible Preserved for Us.

After several years of being our pastor, he even had to change the church's phone number because it had 1611 in it, and people were assuming that that made us a KJVO church. Now, our pastor preaches from the King James. But he uses other versions in his study for comparisons and clarifications, and he doesn't hesitate to point out when another version has a better wording. He also doesn't hesitate to mention when a newer version changed something the KJV got right.

I never knew it was an issue until I went to college. The pastor at the church I attended preached an entire message on the different works of the Holy Spirit depending on whether he was called the "Holy Ghost" or the "Holy Spirit." I sat there looking at my French Bible wondering what in the world he was talking about. I went home and looked it up in my concordance, and I found that "spirit" and "ghost" were the same Greek word. I never really trusted that pastor again - how could he compose an entire message without ONCE cracking his concordance to see if it made any sense?

I don't know the specifics on the churches in my area regarding their stance on the KJV. I've never visited around. If they ARE KJV only, they're not all that loud about it.

Askjo, it still boils down to a matter of opinions. Both sides have valid arguments.

I better PM you, it sounds like we could be members of the same church.
I meant that as a joke, turns out myself and pjlpel are from the same Church! Finally, someone on the Baptist board with some sense!

If you don't live close enough to our church to attend, you ought to move! :D

Agreed AV, IMHO, one needs to be careful and correctly determine the category of truth one is dealing with. The action I take over a disagreement on CAT2\3 truth is different than the action I take for a disagreement on CAT1\2. And if I mistakenly elevate CAT2\3 to CAT1\2, I can blow a place up in arguments.

Dr. Williams wrote in a book, "From the Mind of God to the Mind of Man: A Layman's Guide to How We Got Our Bible" here:
Both these men are now with the Lord and cannot defend themselves against half-truths that have been made into lies.
That is mis-information! I believe they are in hell, not heaven for good reasons:

1. They did not believe Genesis is the biblical history.

Do you think they are in Heaven when they did not believe the story of Genesis?

John 5

46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.
47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

2. They denied Christ's bodily resurrection.

Do you think they went in heaven?

3. They denied any doctrines of the Bible.

Do you they were saved?

That is why the book, "From the Mind of God to the Mind of Man: A Layman's Guide to How We Got Our Bible" is refuted. This book is misleading, mis-informative and false.
