Hebrews 4:15

What is your understanding of the Hebrews passage? How exactly do you think he was tempted? Keep in mind James 1:14. But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

Hebrews 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as [we are, yet] without sin.

We are told He went throught the 40 days in the wilderness, by the way 40 in the bible represents testing or trial. As the Israelites spent 40 years in the Wilderness wandering until that generation that sinned has passed on. So Satan tempted Him in the ways described but, I believe every type of temptation faced Him in that wildernsess time. He was tempted while in His humanity how many times did his disciples advise Him not to do what the Father was leading Him to do. He even had to tell Peter get thee behind me Satan.

So are you saying the passage is saying he was temped with all types of lust, murder, lying, coveting, theft and so on?

This is my thinking.

1 John 2:15-17 says this. "Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world -- the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life -- is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever"

I think that all sin can be categorized under those, what I call, the "big three".

Why these specific three? And did John mention only these? These are the three enticements that the devil deceived Eve with and attempted, but failed, to entice Jesus with.

Lust of the flesh: (this covers all fleshly desires)
  • Genesis 3:6 - "Then the woman saw that the tree was good for food....."
  • Matthew 4:1-3 - "Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread."
Lust of the eyes: (greed, covetousness, ...)
  • Genesis 3:6 - "...And she saw that it was pleasant to the eyes..."
  • Matthew 4:8-9 -"Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me."
The pride of life: (all self-centeredness and vanity)
  • Genesis 3:6 - "...And she saw that the tree was to be desired to make one wise..."
  • Matthew 4:5-6 - "Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. "
I don't know what other sins that Jesus was tempted with. Possibly, it was none. Possibly the devil left Him alone after that as far as sin is concerned. Possibly, Jesus was tempted further. I don't know. But He never sinned.

I just think that all the sins that mankind struggles with can fall under these three.

So, yes, even if Jesus was never tempted again, He understands ALL of our sin because of this and can sympathize with us.

It says He was tempted in all points as we are and sinned not.
He was tempted with the same infirmities we have and yet He sinned not. That is what the scripture tells us.

All right then I assume you are saying he felt the desires of lusts which include homosexuality, fornacation and every other possible dsesire. Also every other feeling like murder rape, and so on, but He just did not carry them out. Is this what you believe the passage is saying?

Not the desire but the temptation a desire would be more like a thought of lust which He said himself was a sin. Now when did it say He took all these is the real question is it not? Think about it when did this occur? During the 40 days in the wilderson in His time of testing? I really don't think so although we are told Satan was there throwing a lot of things at Him, and all these things could have been in this. No I think realistic He was tempted like as we when He bore all our sins on the Cross, for our temptations, our sins actually were taken by Him on the cross and He suffered Spiritual death. When did He suffer Spiritual death when he cried My God (The Fahter), My God (the Holy Spirit) why have you foresaken me? At that moment He was seperated from the Father and the Spirits fellowship because our sin was placed upon Him. All our sins were laid upon Him.

The reason i asked it that way was because of this verse.
James 1:14. But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

Also if he did not feel the temptation how does he have feeling of our infirmities?

While I do not believe that the lord ever felt any desire to sin I have always wondered how He feels our infirmities and how He was tempted even as we. I assume that I am missing something in the meaning.

My answer would be He felt them on the cross when He took them upon him. He took our sins upon Himself, He became sin for us who knew no sin. So connected it that way.
Think of this too, temptation in itself is not sin it is acting upon that temptation that becomes sin. The mental attitude sins for us, to me would be His hardest to resist, He even said to look upon a woman to lust after her was sin. Tha would be a very fine line for men to walk if he had the temptation to even just think it He would feel our infirmities our struggle to resist temptation. Our is a lot stronger I believe because of our nature to sin. He was tempted like unto us but did not sin. That had to be hard.

Good stuff

The temptation account proves the HALT theory. Satan will attack you when you are hungry, angry, lonely or tired.

HALT .... ...oh, I like that one.
I'm going file that in my mountain of notes that I keep.

I also like what Beth Moore says about the attacks of the devil in her book, When Godly People Do Ungodly Things.

She says that:

"There are many kinds of seduction. Spiritual warfare is hardball. And spiritual seduction is always a curveball. We can be sincere, pure, and wholely devoted to God and still be seduced by the serpent's cunning. NEVER turn your back on the enemy.

2 Corinthians 11:1-3 - "I hope you will put up with me in a little foolishness. Yes, please put up with me! I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

Notice the Scripture talks about the Serpent getting to our hearts through our minds. The person decribed has wholehearted devotion to Christ, but the mind is still vulnerable.

Beloved, listen to me, carefully. Satan plays hardball. The psalmist testified about his foes and his powerful enemy with the word, "They confronted me in the day of my disaster" Psalm 18:18. Somehow we secretly hope that the devil, as low as he is, surely has enough scruples to draw the line where the fight would be totally unfair, but Satan has no such scruples. When we have a disaster, we can count on him being right there confronting us at our weakest, most vulnerable point.

"Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes." Ephesians 6:1
