Wayne State (Detroit, MI) may retire name of Helen Thomas Spirit of Diversity Awards after controversy.

The 89-year-old graduated from Wayne State in 1942, and the university's journalism school honors local media professionals each year with the Helen Thomas Spirit of Diversity Awards, established "to recognize her role in promoting diversity in the media and issues of race in America."

I think I would like to see Wayne State officials certainly reconsider whether -- in light of her statements -- they want to continue giving that award," Nodel told the Detroit Free Press. "I think it certainly devalues whatever meaning that award has had in the past or might have in the future.

The woman doesn't deserve this disgrace, IMO. She's a piece of flesh just like the rest of us. It saddens me to see her go out like this, and I don't even know her. I believe she was an easy target in a much larger scheme of things.

Disgusting.

kyredneck, why doesn't she deserve this?

I suppose I have a soft spot for her because of her age, and she's from KY, and probably I'm reading too much into this.

I would have to say it was God who took care of Helen Thomas.

Abraham (Abram)
Genesis 12:3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
Isaac
Genesis 26:3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;
Genesis 26:4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
Jacob (Israel)
Genesis 28:13 And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
Genesis 28:14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

Helen Tomas spouted off her hateful opinion and paid the price. I bet "W" is giggling a little to see a former thorn in his side disgraced.

God didn't have anything to do with it. He already judged the Jewish nation and gave it over to be destroyed by the Romans in AD 70.

It blows my mind that people can't understand that the Jews lost their homeland because of their rejection and persecution of Jesus, the apostles, and christians in general. It's all over the bible. The wrath of God came upon them to the uttermost and God has yet to re-establish them in that land. The nation of Israel today is a man-made nation and has absolutely nothing in common other than the name to the OT nation of Israel.

kyre, I agree. Even if the woman doesn't like Jews, the reaction by the media and others is way over the top. And my guess is that alot of people who are blasting this woman have their own bigotries as well.

Agreed.

The rhetoric surrounding Israel is so polarizing one can't offer a reasonable (not saying she did this btw, this is a secondary line of thought) criticism of Israel without being castigated and maligned. Now Ms. Thomas' comments went too far, though an apology should suffice. Israel has been in the wrong too often and not called on the carpet internationally enough.

Ms. Thomas had a distinguished career and did a good job of asking the hard questions to the leadership of the greatest country in the world. That is not an easy task in and of itself. She also did a tremendous service in breaking the glass ceiling of gender discrimination and opened many doors for women in journalism and throughout our country.

Well, I've said enough here...looking forward to the slings and arrows...;)

In the old days her observation would be defended under the principle of free speech and "calling a spade, a spade." The primary principle of the US system is defending the minority position/people even when you hate their guts. There is a BIG difference between saying that the Jews should voluntarialy leave Palestine and saying that the Arabs should kill the Jews.

saying that the Jews should voluntarialy leave Palestine

Oh, that's what she said.

Voluntarialy!

Somehow I thought I had heard her use a much shorter word (four letters?):

"Tell them get the voluntarialy out of Palestine!"

Thank you. It all makes sense now.

Oh, she's free to say it.

And she's free to pay the consequence for saying moronic things.

Pity you don't understand the distinction.

Emphasis mine

If the events thus far have blown your mind, you'll never survive the grand finale!;)

"While the 89-year-old Thomas is renowned as a trailblazer who aggressively questioned 10 presidents -- her hostility toward Israel has been no secret within the Beltway. Though she gave up her correspondent's job a decade ago, she retained her front-row briefing-room seat, even as colleagues sometimes rolled their eyes at her obvious biases."

"She's always said crazy stuff," said National Review Online columnist Jonah Goldberg.

Mark Rabin, a former freelance cameraman for CNN, said that in a 2002 conversation at the White House, Thomas said "thank God for Hezbollah" for driving Israel out of Lebanon, adding that "Israel is the cause for 99 percent of all this terrorism."

For the same reason we don't deserve grace.
We're all of us fallen, subject to our idiosyncracies and biases, no matter how much we try to cover these with fig leaves.
