Help needed - clothing issue - all hands on deck! LOL!

My hubby is the worship leader at church and typically he wears khakis and a polo on Sunday morning. Our senior pastor last week told him that it would be better if he wore a jacket so he'd look more professional. Now, my hubby plays keyboard and guitar, is VERY active when he worships and he sweats a lot - hence the polo (it's cool and has a collar - but doesn't bind). What kind of jacket should he get? He's got a few sport jackets and suit jackets but they're so binding that he's distracted - and that's not good for the man leading worship!

Do you have any suggestions?? Thanks!

Did you husband explain to him why he doesn't wear one, perhaps they can work out another solution?

I agree that he needs to talk to the pastor. Our pastor and worship leader and a few of the others wear suits, but the musians themselves go jacketless - the worship leaders take theirs off when they pick up instruments.

LOL - My hubby is from the same fabric as you (pun intended) - he hates jackets and only hates ties more.

He did explain the issue and Pastor said that there are a number of nice lightweight jackets with some stretch that he can get. I might have to ask Pastor to take him shopping too! LOL!!

See, our senior pastor is old school when it comes to dress. He wears his suit for any official church stuff, although he does wear just a button down shirt for daily wear. The joke around the office (but it's totally true) is that you DON'T want to be called into a meeting with Pastor when he's wearing his suit. That's when he fires people. Seriously - he won't fire someone unless he's in his suit. LOL

My poor husband hates dressing up. He was an engineer by trade so they just dress in whatever, and then he did software consulting from home (read: sweats or PJs! LOL). He knew he'd have to dress nicer for church and he makes sure he wears nice stuff for Sunday morning. When he's not leading worship, he's always in his suit but when he worships, he worships hard. :laugh:

I am still shocked there are churches that are suit and tie oriented.

Unreasonable dress codes (ones that move beyond modesty and into ridiculous measures) are the tipping point for a host of other issues. I've dealt with this for far too long and can't handle it anymore. We've only got a certain amount of time while on this earth and I can't waste it with people who are on different shelf philosophically. I appreciate their ministry but will have nothing to do with it.

Come on out to our local church and we'll use you.

The majority of the men who come to our church do not come in suits and ties. Some do, some come in sport jackets but the majority come in collared shirts (and pants, of course - slightly more than the majority are in khakis or slacks, the other part is jeans).

The pastoral staff is always in suits on Sunday, though. Again, our pastor is an old school, Texas preacher. I love the man dearly and respect him a lot. My hubby is going to follow his boss's wishes and get a jacket even if it kills him. LOL!! Pastor's really great, though - and if he feels it's time to go jacketless, he'll be more than comfortable to admit it, but for now, he'd like him to wear a jacket.

So, anyone know of a good lightweight, sweat resistant, cooling jacket that one can move around in well?? LOL! I have to say that I found a suit the other day for myself and purchased it and felt great - but very restricted. I can't imagine trying to play guitar that way!

I don't think I made it clear - my hubby is one of the pastors and this "dress code" is just a standard of dress that all the pastors have carried on. It's not written anywhere. That's why hubby has, when he's leading worship, worn a polo and slacks. But our senior pastor thought about it and feels that it's best for DH to wear a jacket to look like one of the pastors. Hubby is OK with following his request - but all he's ever had are those hot stuffy jackets that men wear. If he could find a jacket that would give him range of movement and wouldn't overheat him, he'd be OK with it but he hasn't found anything like that yet.

Just to make it clear - this is not a dress code for any of the congregants. It's just that the pastors all dress in jacket and ties and the deacons when they serve communion are also expected to be in jacket and tie (although if we're short a deacon or two, the deacons who are not on the schedule and so have not been dressed for it will serve and that's fine even if they're not in a jacket and tie). I don't think it's wrong for the pastors to have a little bit of a dress code. During the week, they're all in their regular clothes and on Fridays, they're all in their grubbies for working on the church building!

THAT would be hysterical! And I have to say, our pastor would die laughing at that - and I'd like him around a few more years (we just celebrated him being at our church for 40 years!). That's WAY too funny Tim. :laugh:

Of course, I need to get a copy of the photo of Pastor in his REAL personna - the Silver Fox. It's a character from VBS each year - and he's in a black outfit that's similar (or it seems that way - Pastor has a cape too). You'd laugh at him!

Actually, when I am on shift where I work, we take the kids to one local black church where several members dress in their fine duds. One of the associate pastors has a brown suit, a royal blue suit, a black suit, a purple suit.....a green suit. I have to get tickled.
