Some are having very poor luck with them. I read on a board where they deal in applications that can run from a thumb drive and there are a lot of failures. There is some thought that some drives are worse than others.

I'm beginning to think sd cards may have the same problem. I've had two four gig cards fail within four months of new and usually after I've done backups or moved lots of files.

c:\documents and settings\Your name\Local Settings\application data\microsoft\outlook [if you use outlook] I think it is the .pst file

the .pab is personal address book if you use that.

If you can get into your email program you can also export or save as to .txt files if you'd rather try that.

Ok, I am transfering files from the laptop that is not working right to a computer that I have had for about a yr, but never used.. it was just connected to the internet last night....

I am using a 2 gig jump drive

I am using CA security suite on both computers.
The CA stuff is completely updated...

When I scanned the bad laptop, nothing showed.
But when I transfer files, CA catches a virus named perlovga on my jump drive, and I have to delete it each time.

It is catching this virus from my laptop...
But the laptop shows there is no virus there...

    What can I do...
Thank God, CA is deleting it before I infect my new computer, but could this be the problem with the laptop?

That virus may be what is causing the whole problem with your laptop.

I would get as many files as possible transferred. Then I would use a wipe program to zero the hard drive out completely, repartition it and reinstall the OS.

Truthfully, I am not 100% sure of the files that CA caught. Suppose there is something worse hidden deeper in the files?

Can you affor to lose them? Can you afford to take the chance on infecting yet another PC?

    Hi Tim,

Here is a link to a removal tool that might save your laptop.

    http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/PRT-Perlovga-Removal-Tool-Download-69660.html

Although it might remove it, if you have your files backed up then I would blow your system away, do a fdisk, format and reinstall windows just to be safe after you're done moving things over.

It sounds like, from some of the descriptions that this may in fact be what is causing your system to reboot. Also, viri have a way of hiding and it could be when you move the files over, the "hiding nature" or whatever the viri is using to hide with isn't present so that is why your virus program is catching it. I wouldl also use a second virus program to scan for virus on your new computer you're transferring things too. A second "opinion" is always a good thing. :)

Good luck! At least you're on the way to finding the problem, or if not, you have your files backed up and can start new.

    Jamie

Thanks... SFIC and Jamie, and all others...
I have most everything I need...
And I am doing a scan on everything.. both on the jump drive, and on the new PC...

I probably will wipe her clean this coming week... I just have to find those restore disks in my office...
