High places

Within context of scripture can the high places referred to many times in the O.T. be linked to the following scriptures?

2 Corinthians 10:4-6 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

As a sort of addendum, I understand the high places to be something apart from the temple but used by individuals who still thought the practices of the heathen had some value. Obviously they were wrong in this thought but most kings allowed them to stand and we read in more than one instance that a king loved the Lord God but did not remove the high places.

Within the individual believer is the mind and a particular philosophy or philosophies by which he operates under apart from (in most cases) the word of God. He is a believer in the All Mighty God and the Lord Jesus Christ but none the less holds to certain beliefs that are not consistent with scripture or the doctrines or beliefs of his local New Testament Church.



Is the latter presentation consistent with the High places of the O.T.?

In my understanding, a high place was where they would worship their false gods, (probably on a hilltop, thus high place?) When you read throughout the OT, you see these statements often like

2 Kings 12:2-3
2 And Jehoash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all his days wherein Jehoiada the priest instructed him.
3 But the high places were not taken away: the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.

Sometimes we find that the Israelites were worshiping the Lord in these high places.

2 Chronicles 33:17
17 Nevertheless the people did sacrifice still in the high places, yet unto the LORD their God only.

But they inevitably returned to idolotry.

I would liken this to something in the believers life that is a holdover from their past, something that they are unwilling to give up. Often they may try to sanctify it by using it to worship the Lord. But it usually ends up presenting a stumbling block.

I don't think you can make a direct linkage.

"We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete." (ESV)

"We tear down arguments and every arrogant obstacle that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to make it obey Christ. We are also ready to punish every act of disobedience, whenever your obedience is complete. " (NET)

The idea is of human knowledge that considers itself superior to the revelation of the gospel.

As John Gill put it, "every proud thought of the heart, every great swelling word of vanity, every big look, even all the lofty looks and haughtiness of men, with every airy flight, and high towering imagination, reasoning, and argument advanced against the Gospel of Christ;"
