"Them" is Israel. It means, God put His Holy Spirit into the midst of the camp of Israel to guide the entire nation. As it was already noted in the OP.

"...."in the midst," "the inner part," or "among them". When applied to the camp of Israel, a collective group (which is what "within him" from Isaiah 63:11 is speaking of), it's always translated "in the midst", or "among them". Remember, the singular suffix ("his") in Isaiah 63:11 refers to the corporate body of Israel."



Taking His spirit from David does not necessitate the Holy Spirit indwelling.

Well there were plenty of people in the Old Testament who had the Holy Spirit. Just a few examples:

NKJV Isa 63:11 Then he remembered the days of old, Moses and his people, saying: "Where is He who brought them up out of the sea With the shepherd of His flock? Where is He who put His Holy Spirit within them,

Psa 51:11 Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
(How could God take the Holy Spirit from David if David did not have the Holy Spirit?)

Exo 31:3 And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,

Num 24:2 And Balaam raised his eyes, and saw Israel encamped according to their tribes; and the Spirit of God came upon him

I assure you that I have been a believer for over 50 years, having by God's grace put my trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as my Saviour. I am a Baptist.

Ok gotta clear up this...

John The Baptist had empowerment not the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, indwelling happened at Pentecost after the ascension, John is no exception.
