I really don't see a big difference between a movie at home and one at the theaters. Just the people, the remote and what else? ohh! They're world people and I have to be seperate! But wait a minute my job is around those peeps. What shall I do?

Some people are weary about going to a movie theater because of what is often played in theaters. I believe that those who avoid it because it looks worldly would have a double take if they looked at how Jesus ate with outcasts and sinners. If you find yourself in a movie that is ungodly, there is a simple solution: walk out. It has a powerful impact on people who the Holy Spirit is working in their lives.

Most people would be willign to turn off a movie that they are watchign at home if it has something in it that they know they shouldn't be watching, but would as many people walk out of a movie theater?

I have done so on several occasions, even when taking proper preliminary cautions. While the rating guide for movies is done by a secular company, the ratings still give you some idea of how bad a movie is. Also, just understanding what the central idea in the movie is can help. For instance, you can find out that Patch Adams is a "heartwarming tale" and a "wonderful family movie". These statements probably mean its clean. If you go to the movie and find out otherwise, you can leave. If you really can't handle walking out of a movie, then maybe you shouldn't.

Took my family to see "ON GOLDEN POND" many years ago; Me, wife, daughter (~12), son (~10). Thought the plot was great, but couldn't handle the language. Most of the profanity in this movie seemed to be there simply for it's own sake; added nothing to the story that I could see.
Somewhere around the middle, I'd had all I could take, so we left.

I RARELY go to movies now for that very reason. I don't like profanity even when used in a true context, but I refuse to support a film where it's used purely as expletives, & no other reason.

One of the last movies I went to see, I should have walked out of. I plead the fifth on telling you what movie it was, but I didn't walk out because I had spent the money. Later, I realized, Hey-I didn't gain any money by staying, so now, I am more willing to walk out. I don't go to the movies often, not because I think it is worldly, but because I think it is expensive. There is a Christian school here in town that does not allow it's teachers to go to the movies, but it does not say anything about the teachers renting the movies after the film is released.

Which is perfectly fine, that is your personal choice. I have choosen in the past to see the following movies which I have not walked out of:

October Sky
The Truman Show
The Shawshank Redemption (one bad spout of language)
Amistad
Patch Adams
Mrs. Doubtfire
Antz
Shrek
Rugrat's Movie
Titan AE
Left Behind
102 Dalmations
Cats and Dogs

and alot of others i can't think of. So there are wholesome movies out there. Always check the content rating (below every rating such as G or PG it gives the reasons why it is rated for that reason. Sometimes its just comic mischief, sometimes more.

I have chosen to not attend movie theaters. I DO rent videos. Yes, that sounds and looks inconsistent on the surface, but I have a personal reason that I will not elaborate in this forum. (Anyone interested can use the personal message option in this forum. I am more than glad to share the reasons behind my decision, but in a more personal format...)

But here's the BEST step I've ever added to the equation. I look the film up at the PLUGGED IN on-line magazine. This site has a fair, but decidedly Christian POV. They deal with the violence content, language, sexual content, spiritual/occult messsages, etc. It is a fantastic site for Christians who want to please the Lord, but don't wish to "have their head in the sand."

Here's the link: www.pluggedinmag.com

TRY IT. YOU'LL BE IMPRESSED WITH THE FAIRNESS AND BALANCE OF THE REVIEWERS. THEY ALSO REVIEW MUSIC, VIDEO GAMES AND TV SHOWS IN THE SITE.

Hope this helps.....

my dad, a youth pastor, doesn't go because that's a great way to get rumors started

"Hey, I saw Mr. Alan go into the theatre... what do you think he saw?"

"That latest R rated movie filled with sexual stuff!"

"ha ha"

meanwhile someone takes it seriously and boom!

I go... but only with friends and then I make it known to all what I saw LOL

So what's the difference if you go or your dad goes? See this is where I believe a double standard falls into place and please don't take this at personal offense because it's not meant that way. Your dad is firm on not going due to his statis and position in the church and how it might look and yet for some reason it's ok for his kid to go? I've been going to movies for years now, and I've heard many christians use the excuse for not going that "people might see me going in", I can tell you that anyone going into a movie could pretty much care less that you are even there. Don't take me wrong, it's everyone's personal choice to go or not to go but your post just struck me is all...keep it real.

The Shawshank Redemption (one bad spout of language
Ny son has this movie, and bought it against my wishes, then didn't tell me he had it.(he was 18 at the time, not a child), I saw it one day when I walked into(Iknocked first) his room to talk to him. I hate this movie, and yes I've seen it. It has more then just a little objectional language. Like male on male rape sceens. This is not entertainment in my opinion.

My family is kind of split on the movie issue.

My wife does not go to movies because she is a Sunday School Teacher and that is one of the rules for teachers in our church. Truth be told she never really enjoyed going to movies anyway because of a hearing problem.

I do attend and take the kids. With multi-plexes I do understand that there can be an apperance of evil, however I know what I am seeing and I know that God knows what I am seeing. I have never walked out of a movie, however I think I would if I objected. The money thing was always an issue before I was saved. Since I have been saved I have not gone to anything that there was a reason to walk out of, so I have not been tested in this area.

We need to be very careful what we see at the movies and what we watch at home. There should be no difference between the two. If I wouldn't walk into a movie theater to see it, I shouldn't rent it and watch it in my home. If I would walk out of a theater then I shold turn off the VCR

Is there a double standard in how this is handled in my home? I don't belive so. Jeanne has made a personal decision, based on her beliefs and her calling to teach the kids. That is her choice to make. I have made a decision based on my beliefs for the family and she respects my position as head of the family.

And you are entitled to that opinion. Actually, there are no male to male rape scenes. It is implied that this happened when Red is talking to him, but there are no visuals. I would not suggest the movie for a young child, but it is a great piece of work. While I do watch movies on occasion for entertainment, I mainly watch them to analyze the themes and lessons the movie shares. Have you ever seen "Dead Poet's Society"? One of the best movies ever made to analyze in my opinion. But then again, that's only my opinion.

Adam, I have seen the movie, and there most certainy is a male on male sex/rape scene. And it is implyed that this is the norm. He now expects it.
If you like I will watch the disgusting thing again and check the vcr timer to see just where it is.
On second thought, the idea of watching it again discusts me. you watch it. Homosexual sex is not entertainment. I don't watch it in any movie, or tv show.

Sorry Katie, I just got done watching the movie, and its not there
Perhaps in your bias against the movie you precieve it to be there, however do not watch it again as it angers you as much as it does.

Peace be with you sister.

Adam, you didn't see homosexual sex in that movie? Then what exactly did you think was happening? I could be more grapic, but this is a christian board, and this is the youth forum.

Nope, I didn't. I saw where the gang would enter a room and then the scene would change and later they would look at each other and knew what happened, but no, there were no graphics

Now I never said I agreed with what happened in the movie- but that is not why it is such a good movie. The principles of the movie and the lessons learned about freedom are what is important.

My sons purpose in liking the movie seems to be how slick he got away with stealing someone elses moeny. And gettingaway with it.
Oh, well, we can watch what ever I guess, you would approve of my movies either I'm sure. I get to much seriousness in life, and just want to relax when I watch a movie, but that doesn't mean I'm not picky when I do watch. But there are so few mivies out there you can actually watch. And now I have even stiffer qualifications for movies. i don't watch a movie about prison at all, I don't watch about a certain crime(even if it's not the focus of the movie, which will remain unnamed here), I no longer watch court room movies or tv(I've seen too many court rooms in real life now). And of course no sex, nudirty, or too much language(even some G rated have a some words you'd rather they didn't). So I just here lately don't watch very much tv or movies at all.

Katie, you may be surprised to know that I have pastors coming to me to see if I approve a certian movies. I have seen a great deal of movies, some I'm not proud that I have seen, but my knowledge is being used by God know to help others avoid seemingly wholesome movies which end up sour.

At one time I had nearly 300 titles in my collection. After really being convicted by what is in most movies I'm down to about 50 or so, and most of those are ones I bought more recently.

If your ever up for a wholesome "horror" flick I suggest one of the older Dracula movies called "Nosferatu" with Klaus Kinski and Isabelle Adjani. The photography is absolutely perfect for the movie. It is rated PG for nothing more than it is suppose to be a horror movie. I think the worse scene in it is the beginning where there are pictures of mummies.

Again guys, please consult:

www.pluggedinmag.com

IT WILL REALLY HELP IN THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESS BEFORE YOU EVER ATTEND A MOVIE...{UNLESS YOU'RE THE TYPE THAT HAS TO GO ON THE RELEASE DATE.} The folks at Plugged In are usually a couple of days AFTER the release date for their reviews about the movies.
