How can this be happening in America?

I happen to know Andy well, and his is a sad story, yet one of great personal dedication, commitment, personal faith and loving service by a believer towards the less fortunate in our society.

If you didn't know that this was a mission in the midst of a United States metropolitan city, one may think this story was something ripped straight out of a third-world country!

This is appalling, and while we continue to allow illegal's, and now refugees, from third and fourth world nations to flood over our borders unchecked, our own folks, AMERICAN citizens, are being forced to the streets with fewer job opportunities, and no incentives to help keep America the nation of greatness that it once was!

How can this be happening in America? Because IMHO,Americans no longer care about their own! We are too concerned over the poor and the down trodden of other nations. People who care less about the laws and traditions of this nation, and only about their own selfish gains!

My wife and I spent more than 24 years volunteering down there, and let me say this: It is much worse and deploring now than it was then! This is a shame! We need to do more than pray! We need to make America Great Again, before it is too late!

I wonder if any of you would ever consider serving God in a place like LA's skid row?

Your comments continue to get more and more disgusting as the days go by. We are TOO CONCERNED over the poor and down trodden of other nations?

Like that is a bad thing.

It's comments like that which truly bring to light what Scripture says. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ Mat. 7:22-23

How does anyone who follows Jesus fix their fingers to type that foolishness?

95%+ of the world's population lies outside the wealthiest country in the world, but you foolishly express that Americans no longer care about their own as though that has to take precedent over helping the poor outside the US.

One of the most disgustingly, selfish things I've seen someone type in a long time. But once again, the wickedness of the heart is exposed.

It's a shame that folks care more about "this great, wicked nation and keeping and passing on their accumulated STUFF" than they do about people.

And for all you folks always talking about this "Great America", please give a year that we should return your America to in which it was so great.

I'll wait.

Once again, your ignorance and lack of apathy for the real American people, is alive and well!

I'd ignore you, but I do get a laugh out of your ridiculaous attempt to draw all the attention of a topic/OP to you!

:tear: I speak "Ichabod" over you, your words, and any attempts to display what you call a ministry? :tear:

Now it is I who waits! :flower:

This should have been my response, but, I try to respond to you as Christ would! Still, after looking over your rant (a second and third time) I am shaking the dust from my sandals, and in the words of my brother Rev:

"It isn’t right to have precious human beings living and dying in this filth, on the streets of skid row... To have precious people living in these conditions and dying – it's an embarrassment."

It really IS an embarrassment. What can the church do? I would hope that the local churches are trying their best to help out even some of these people in simple ways from bringing food and water to them to making sure they have access to showers and medical care. :(

That might be easier said than done as no one including the law makers and enforcers know how many laws there are or what's really in them.

Then you do what you can until you are told not to. Just delivering a sandwich, a drink and a hygiene kit is a great blessing and pretty under the radar when you don't have a set location to give it out but instead go to where the homeless are.

I'm not disagreeing with you but how does that mesh with Romans 13? Some Christian folk might look upon that as being disobedient to God's command that we obey all of man's laws.

Is it against the law to hand another person a sandwich, drink and some body wipes? I don't think so. :)

Yep - Each of those are organized situations where there is a central feeding location or a larger scale handing out of food. If I were to walk by a homeless person and hand them a bag with a sandwich, drink and hygiene kit, it would be fine. There is no law against handing one individual a sandwich.

I hope you're right. Don't be surprised if the police are of a different opinion.

Agreed. There are no laws against doing such acts of kindness! Jesus did hand out fish and bread, setting the example for us! And if there were any laws against it, Rome would have had them!

Mark 14:7 The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want.

That's truncated without indication.

Mark 14:7 (KJV) For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.

Illegal in 21 cities

Are we really helping?

And the example of Jesus feeding the 5,ooo is a poor example, as they were not homeless.

In the first link, I still don't see a problem with one person handing a person a sandwich. My daughter lives in NYC and she would go to McDonald's for breakfast periodically. They had the "2 for $3" of a breakfast sandwich and she'd get both and then hand one of them to a homeless person she passed on the way to school. I don't think there is any law against that. :)

In the second link, I do agree that it's really good for us to work with local homeless charities to help them do the job that they do really well but let's face it, there will be some who will not go to a ministry for whatever reason. We had a "homeless" lady in our town growing up who always looked so downtrodden. Jesse was a nice enough lady until you tried to help her and then she would get angry at you. Our church really tried to reach out to help her but she wanted nothing to do with it. After doing some research, one of our deacons found out that Jesse was not homeless and her daughter lived right in town. It seems Jesse was dealing with mental illness and chose to live on the streets, dirty and hungry, sleeping out in the elements despite the fact that she had a home three blocks away and $60,000 in the bank. Her daughter told us that no matter what she did, her mother would leave and unless she had her committed (which she doubted was even possible because her mother was very clear about her wishes), she couldn't get her back inside.

I'm not saying that homeless people are fake but some have mental illness that drives them to the street and even a logical choice of going to a mission for true help might not be welcomed. In that case, if they are willing to take my sandwich, at least their stomach isn't empty.
