Hi Doc! When you say "their congregations," you really mean GOD's congregations - not a pastor's "people." [IMG]

I often say "my congregation" when speaking
of the people where I attend services. It is
merely a term used to indicate a specific group
of people. And Ii have no specific place within
my congregation other than a mere member.

Could he be possibly on the right track? After all, God did put him in charge of His flock! [IMG]

Hey latterrain, Yes, in the strictest and purest sense they are God's people. As we all are who have been saved by grace through faith. I think probably the usage of the term "my people" and "my congregation" by pastors stems from the fact that as under shepherds of the flock they are entrusted with the spiritual well being of the members.

Again, not putting words in anyone's mouth, as used it is merely a colloquialism and not intended to elevate oneself above or take anything away from God.

    Peace to you, brother. Doc

    Oh, oh....
I believe a pastor may guide, advice, pray for the flock, feed the flock.
He is entitled to honor and obedience.
But control every aspect of your life ? What. He's the Holy Spirit now ?

    Pastors should influence, not control.

Early in my christian life I felt as the Pastor was trying to control me, but as I grew as a christian I came to realize he actually wasn't it was just my worldly attitude of wanting to do what I want and not wanting to yield to the things of God. I now know that a pastor gives us the truth to help guide us to make wise decisions. As a pastor's wife I see what my husband goes through and what he wants for his flock that he loves. He wants them to have a victorious christian life.

    Blackbird the pastor says
    (1) the pastor is lame for telling the folks when, where, what color, what length, what kind of makeup he likes best, etc.--bad, bad taste in pastor's mentaltiy

    (2) the parishener is lame for actually going out and doing what it is the preacher is spelling out for them to do

Brother Villines--I'm in your corner on this one. Only the moment the member goes to moving his/her letter--mercy!!--the Negative IQ pastor comes runnin' over--squallin' and bawlin' his eyes out--"Oh, please don't go! Please!"

My mother's former pastor was that way. It took many months for us to open her eyes to what was going on. Praise the Lord she finally left that IFB church and went to a Conservative Baptist Church.
