This is really Gwyneth's poll but she wasn't sure how to do the poll.

It might be interesting to know also about how long you spend when reading the Bible, and if you go through the Bible systematically or pick a book at a time, or some other method.

It varies how much I read, some days just a thought or two then other days I may read for hours. I'm doing a through the bible in a year deal then I also read just to read.

I read it through at least three times a year, and have for several years. In January, I read my 18th translation, and my goal is to finish my 20th, by the end of the year.:jesus:

I follow Scripture Union Notes every morning at 5:am, followed by personal communication with God.

I then read portions all day long and into evening, especially if some issue pops up and I want to chck on it.

I haven't systematically read through the Bible since Bible College days. I did have someone instruct me to try reading the Bible, so maybe I should get into that religious thing of reading through the Bible in a year.

Seriouslt, for those who do claim to read through the Bible each year, do you actually read all the begats? How much do they mean to you?

Everyone that says they read the Bible every day, need to go to the alter on Sunday. :saint: Actually I read a few verses a day. Like Jim it has been awhile sense I have read it straight through. :saint:

I have been reading the Bible at least twice daily for about 6 years with the Bible reading group on Baptist Board, at work I am going through Romans. Before following the daily studies posted by Clint on BB , I used to flit about reading bits and pieces, but these studies have given me a plan to follow. Helen Setterfield has a study on her husbands website and , God willing , I hope to take a look at that soon, that one is taking about 4 years to go right through the Bible from front to back, instead of the `4 book plan ` on here.
The `begats` are a problem with me and I tend to not get a lot from them, sometimes recognising a name here and there but I would be grateful of some assistance with those, as I get very bogged down in them.

Gwyneth,

The begats give some historical significance to scripture and show where all the events fit in...Beware, some names are left out and I haven't a clue why that is.

They sort of establish the dating of events.

Why would someone claiming to read the bible daily need to go to the altar?

Its my 'hobby' if you will. My children say I have two hobbies, driving my truck and reading my bible..lol




As for the begats..... I have no clue where it is in my pile of 'important documents' but I read a paper not long ago explaining the significance of the OT begats. It looks like every time a major even was about to occur the main character was on his own (maybe so they would rely on God instead of great grandpa), but people tended to live longer after the event. (Maybe as a lasting eye witness to the event) It was an impressive paper from the sheer amount of work that went into studying one of the more 'boring' sections and finding a lesson in it.

I should have given "Other" as an option but forgot to.

So far, everyone who has voted reads every day or at least 3 or 4 times a week.

As a new believer in '92, I read through the bible in a year but have not done that since.

I like to do Bible reading systematically with some kind of book that serves as a study guide. Last year, I used the Names of God by Nathan Stone, and it was very rewarding. I have the Names of Christ and the Names of the Holy Spirit to do at some point, but right now am finishing up using "The Gospel of the Kingdom" by George Eldon Ladd along with reading the Bible.

I also have a study on Isaiah by Wiersbe I'd like to do while reading Isaiah.

I'm really trying to read more and more every day. I already finished Reading Genesis & Exodus and Now I am currently on Leviticus (sorry if i spelled that one wrong). I'm so confused about all the different sacrifices though in Leviticus. Very confusing, I must say :-/

It's okay if the sacrifices seems confusing in Leviticus. Just reading through the Bible is good. You can read it again later or study the sacrifices in a book. The sacrifices showed the Israelites the deadly cost of sin and foreshadowed the sacrifice of Christ. That's the most important thing.

Pretty much every day. It's fairly difficult with two children under 5 but I normally manage to snatch about 10 minutes or so each morning while Mrs B is in the shower and the kids are downstairs. I then meditate on the Scripture whilst I'm in the shower (well, in theory!).

As to Bible-reading programs, I worked through Search the Scriptures over about three years; I now use the Anglican lectionary as the basis for my readings (ie whole Bible in three years), although our parish is presently following a program of reading the entire Bible through in one year.

Matt, Have you every seen Scripture Union Notes. Send for a sample on line. I think you would enjoy them and benefit greatly with your time problem.

I read the Bible every day. Sometimes it's just a few verses other times it's a few chapters. I really need to start reading the Bible more.
