How Seven Republicans Hope Biden Will Help Put Impeachment to Rest

Seven Republican members of Congress on Saturday sent a letter to President-elect Joe Biden, asking him to request Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) discontinue the House's second impeachment of President Donald Trump.

The members of Congress cite Biden's previous calls to heal the country's division as a reason he should take this "important step."

"In the spirit of healing and fidelity to our Constitution, we ask that you formally request that Speaker Nancy Pelosi discontinue her efforts to impeach President Donald J. Trump a second time," the letter stated. "A second impeachment, only days before President Trump will leave office, is as unnecessary as it is inflammatory. This impeachment would undermine your priority of unifying Americans, and would be a further distraction to our nation at a time when millions of our fellow citizens are hurting because of the pandemic and the economic fallout. We respectfully urge you to encourage Speaker Pelosi to set aside this partisan effort immediately."

Oh now we are worried about being inflammatory.

It's got to stop somewhere. At least someone is doing something.

It’s just the timing. They could have been doing “something” prior to the mayhem of Wednesday. Everyone just sat back and watched him stoke the fires. The calls for unity and to stop the bleeding seem hollow to me at this point and now putting this into the Democrats hands to calm things seems like a copout. Trump is and was an issue for everyone but he is their beast.

Despite all of these Republicans soundly denouncing the events of last week I suspect when it comes to voting time they will voice the same “stop the divisiveness” stuff and not follow the Democrats lead.

The only consequences Trump will face is a Twitter ban and people are already whining about that.

It helps that these are the Republicans who stood with the US Constitution even when so many Republicans wanted them to fight against the election results.

I guess we see things differently. Remember, I'm not a Trump fan, but I saw four years of people foaming at the mouth in hatred over Trump and vulgar hatred of conservatives to the point of a horror show and then Biden in December calling for unity.

He will either provide it or he won't. The leader who pledges unity provides it whether or not some outliers want it or not.

As I said. It has to stop somewhere. Just as example, what's going on just on the Baptist Board is trolling, hatred, use of profanity, and calling people unsaved, insinuating people to be unsaved, and it's getting worse by the day.

It's GOT to stop somewhere.

I fully agree with everything you said but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to see people face consequences for some of the things I saw Wednesday and I think impeachment of the man who stoked it shouldn’t go unpunished. He can’t be in the office again. I’m all for unity with what’s left afterwards but I don’t think you can really unify with SOME of what I saw Wednesday.

The problem is Trump did not actually stoke the fire. It was building for a little over 4 years. Trump got people excited, like Biden he continued with a false political narrative, and then he encouraged the attendees to make their voices known by peacefully protesting at the Capital.

We could blame Trump for continuing to miskead his followers, but Biden was doing the same thing. We could say he encouraged the violence....but he didn't (he emphasized "peaceful" protest.

His failure was not knowing when to quit, perhaps not realizing the potential for mob mentality. And his responsibility is that he is President and chose to continue for his pride rather than seek a peaceful transfer.

Nothing he said was wrong. Nothing he said was worse than Biden. Sure, he was spouting false ideas, propaganda and conspiracy theories...but the DNC has been for 4 years.

Timing was why Trump bears responsibility.

A gracious view for sure and you are a gracious person in general Jon. I just feel that the idea that things didn’t have the potential to go south is a historically poor choice. No one can control a mob. Timing yes but this didn’t have to happen.

Anyone who thinks people are being misled by Trump do not actually understand who "his followers" are or what is their real concerns. You should just stop talking. You have no idea what is going on.

True. And we should not expect less of our President than we would of any leader.

Our Vice President was literally being threatened with a hanging if he didn’t do something he literally didn’t even have the power to do. Our definitions of “misled” appear to be greatly different.

60 minutes is playing the audio of Trumps call to Georgia and that alone is almost worth impeachment. It’s been a crazy week.

Just to vent. I really hate seeing what is happening to Mike Pence. He is a man I have a lot of respect for. I don’t agree with everything he says but he is about as principled of a politician you’ll see this day and age. He does the right thing with grace and dignity even when it probably hurts. He doesn’t deserve this.

I've already announced how this will end. No one is listening.

Why don't we leave the retribution to our Savior? Do you not believe that he is the most competent to both judge and punish?

This is an odd take. So why would we bother with laws and trials and juries and prisons? Strange logic.

Logic can't comprehend the mercy of the Lord. Seventy times Seven.
