How the Democrats can win in '06 and '08.

That's easy. They can just dress in republican clothes and win again just like they did in the last two elections.

 

How could they possibly do that?

 

I didn't mean to say she had no shot at it, just that morals may be more of an issue with her than with some other candidates. She carries a lot of baggage, and some of it may not hold up to intense scrutiny.

I agree with your assessment that Hillary is moving right in her rhetoric and has been since the last Presidential election. She will say or do whatever it takes to be elected. We already know that.

NCLB is a winning issue. Outside of professional educators, nobody has a problem with it. While I believe that education should be a state and local issue, it isn't. As long as the federal government funds education, they will have rules for obtaining those funds. (Now, let's see how loud the teachers scream if the feds stop giving $$$ for education) If their guidelines mean that children are better equipped to meet the demands of a modern world, most people will be happy. The accusation that teachers will teach to the test are folly. If the test measures how well children read, write, and perform basic math... THEN I WANT THEM TEACHING TO THE TEST. Liberals may openly be against NCLB, but it cannot be a winning issue for them. The plan has Democrat fingerprints all over it. If Bush's actual plan would have passed, it could be an argument. But, with the version we have, opposing it during a campaign will just bring about more "flip-flop" accusations, especially if the candidate in question voted for, or assisted in drafting, the legislation.

Breaking from NCLB on the part of Republicans would not be wise. Democrats are already seen as the party of education due to the union ties between the DNC and NEA. Doing anything to look further anti-education would be foolish. For some reason, the Democrats have people believing that the Republicans don't want their children to receive a quality education. The GOP cannot make these claims easier for them.
