Do people really think that God cares what we wear to church? Dress in a culturally acceptable manner, but how you dress is really not on God's mind...he's much more interested in your heart than what you can or cannot afford to buy. The debate is just legalism at its finest.

I don't really think God cares if your wearing the very best man can make, fancy, expensive, or raggedy, torn, and patched. God cares whats in th heart. Basically what I see on all these clothing topics is advocating dressing for the eyes of men(other people). Dressing for approval of others, advoiding the disapproval of others.
You know the shephards were not allowed to got ot the synagogue to worship becasue of their dirty smelly clothes, but they were the ones the angels announced the birth of Jesus too,and they were the forst worshipers to arrive. We see the contrast of men's ideas of proper dress for worship, and God's. The people in the bible probably did not have a closet full of clothing, and would go and choose something nice, like a suit and tie to wear to worship, more then likelu they wore what they wore that day, and probaly owned maybe two changes of clothing if that. I think it was and is the heart God sees and most cares about, all other things will come from that, things satisfying to God, not men.
So to those who think people should and have to dress up for worship, get over it. God din't say anthing like that in the bible.
Otherwise you couldn't worship while doing the gardening, or washing dishes.

HI Charles,

I think that when someone tells others what SHOULD be worn to church, that is legalism -- especially if the one doing the telling is in a position of authority in the church.

On the other hand, when one follows one's own convictions about the matter, that is not legalism, but simply part of a relationship between that person and God.

For me, I would feel awfully funny wearing my best to bed, as that is where I seem to spend most of the time actually talking to the Lord! The other thing I can think of here is that, for a Christian, we don't have to go to church to meet the Lord, as He resides in us through the Holy Spirit. But at church we meet with others for corporate worship and learning. And I truly can see -- for me -- a reason there for looking like I respect the God I am worshiping.
