How things have changed....

The great tragedy to my mind is that 1984 was the last year that the GOP gave us a real choice.

President Reagan was not perfect, but at least we could cast a vote in total good conscience.

And today the GOP gives us Mitt Romney instead - indeed how things have changed :-(.

:tear: That indeed brings a tear. :tear:

While I do agree with the above, to stop there is the equivalent of a kid falling on his bike and bewailing a scratched fender (Romney) and ignoring a broken arm (Obama)!:BangHead:

I don't think so. The point is that if the GOP would give us a choice in the mould of President Reagan we would not have to worry about the Obama's of this world.

The biggest mistake President Bush made was picking a Bush as running mate. With that as the new pattern we have doomed to mediocrity at best and disaster at worst.

I wish the GOP leadership would take something like this to heart and see how they can begin to restore America because the Democrats are not going to do it.

Whoops - sorry

When we think about it we could vote for Reagan because of what he was and stood for. The only reason to vote for the last few choices was because they were not Gore, or not Kerry, or not Obama.

Things have changed indeed

Couldn't agree more with that; but I kinda liked ol' Herbert, a lot more than his son.

Why do you thinks that is?

Democrats can't be held responsible for anything and it's solely up to Republicans to salvage the country?

And if they can't manage it, it's all their fault?

Do Republicans have to present the perfect candidate for us to choose, or be demonized if they don't, while democrats present an Obama?

Why is that exactly? I've never seen the prefect candidate you now require of Republicans.

Even Reagan had warts just like everybody else.He stands out as an outstanding president to me for reasons not wholly related to his politics.

It sounds a little like many progressives that would require the republicans to be...more...well...more like them. and then things would be just grand.

Not perfect, just a choice between more than Tweedledee and Tweedledum.

President Reagan, though indeed not perfect, gave that choice - no one since has.

In 1980 the Democrats had failure of an incumbent and the GOP gave us Ronald Reagan.

In 2013 the Democrats have a failure of an incumbent and the GOP gives us Mitt Romney.

Have things changed?

And with that mindset the GOP will continue to give us mediocrity who don't really deserve the same party label as President Reagan.

LadyEagle was right in her OP - 'How things have changed'

And progressives will be happy because republicans can't come up with the perfect candidate that you require.

And they don't have to.

From a republican standpoint, I'd say, with friends like you , who needs enemies.

A couple of examples:

Bush/Gore The choice couldn't have been clearer to anyone paying attention. One only has to look at Gore after his loss to confirm just how weak and damaging his character would have been. fortunately, just enough voters saw through him.

Bush/Kerry The choice was clear. A traitor in the Oval Office was not to be tolerated.

Obama/ McCain Anyone with half a brain would have to choose McCain. And I didn't like him at all. But the choice was still clear.

This time around, I don't care that much for Romney, but the choice is still clear. Obama has to be fired.

Not all that much. Being a republican governor of an extremely liberal state, Reagan's history at the time was sprinkled heavily with big government liberal spending habits and compromises.

But that was when it was OK for a republican to compromise with democrats. They can't do that anymore , or they're not good enough to be elected. They have to be perfect.

By your standards, Reagan would have been considered a RINO:

1.Reagan tripled the national debt
2.Reagan raised taxes 11 times
3.Reagan expanded the size of government
4.Reagan supported the "socialist" Earned Income Tax Credit
5.Reagan negotiated with terrorists in Tehran
6.Reagan gave amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants
7.Reagan signed abortion rights law in California

Good thing I never claimed to be a Republican friend. I don't like either branch of the Republicrat Party or their candidates Obamney.

I have to say, you a brave man to post anti-Reagan comments on a pro-Reagan thread :)

Of course those things are true, we all know that when it comes down to policies he was no true conservative. But no one can honestly and positively compare either Bush, McCain, or Romney to President Reagan's ability to draw the nation together and inspire confidence. That is was the US needs and there is no one out there to do that.
