I never claimed that Christ taught a false Hell doctrine. I was refering to Christians today which are taught "Hell doctrine" from the pulpit that is false.

Christ never taught that hell contains a fire that tortures, rather one that destroys (consumes the body) Your Mark refer were of those that die and are eaten by maggots and the fire is the rotting (consuming) of the body, an indication of death. You will notice no indication of suffering or torture, or pain felt by those who die, in these verses. There is no "everlasting life scriptures" for men except in heaven, otherwise it is death. Play John 3:16 in your head again.

 

The doctrine of hell that is taught in most evangelical pulpits today is the doctrine that Christ taught, rather than the one you teach. Mar 9 is explicit that there is death or end to the fire of hell. It is unsustainable that the text means anything else.

Luke 16 provides a clear teaching of torment in hell. Revelation 14:11 is unmistakeable about the eternal nature of torment in hell. This doctrine is well substantiated in Scripture.

Coming back to our brother's original question the correct way to preach on Hell is the second option that he proposed. To give people fire and brimstone will simply put them off; but to speak of Hell as an awful place but then to outline the love of God in sending Christ etc. is more likely to lead the person to salvation.

Both ways together and intertwined! I'd use text from Luke 16. You know the story, of Lazarus and the rich man! But I'd definitely want to be prayed up and have the Holy Spirit annointing on me for this sermon. Gee I'm not a preacher, but given the opportunity, I'd love to have a chance at preaching this subject! People at work say I do a fine job of preaching..... he he he!

And be careful who is included when you say "ourselves", cuz I won't be going.

 

Is hell death or eternal suffering? Post-it, that is material for another forum perhaps.

Hell should be preached but it is wrong to scare people into heaven. The truth of eternal torment should be preached but balanced with the saving grace of God. It is appealing to the whole person in sermons that should be the goal. If we get a purely emotive response, i.e. fear, then we have failed. If we get belief in the mind, repentence in the mind and will and fear AND hope in the emotions then we are getting good preaching.

 

Jesus preached both. So what is the discussion?
