HURRICANE KATRINA Thread

I think Jesse Jackson is wrong on many points of the speeches he is making, but I do agree with him on one point. The large churches left standing in the area SHOULD be opening up those "million dollar sanctuaries" and using those air conditioned rooms for people so that they don't HAVE to be shipped 15 hours away to find a place to use the bathroom.

I'd rather have church in a parking lot every Sunday than know that "my carpet" mattered more than people.

I was hoping for this...
Carnival announced the Ecstasy and two other company ships would be pulled from regular cruise service for six months and chartered to the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide temporary housing for Hurricane Katrina victims. Sisterships Ecstasy and Sensation are to base in Galveston, Texas, while the Holiday is to be docked in Mobile, Ala.

GOOD NEWS!

Former head of FEMA (under Clinton) is now helping out the present FEMA administration at Command and Control Center in Baton Rouge.

As a result of getting ducks in a row, Cable News is reporting this evening that OUR US MILITARY, National Guard, and Army Reserves - have fed, watered, and evacuated over 19,000 from the nasty Convention Center today. Flights have ceased for the night and now there is a bus picking up a few straglers.

The US Coast Guard has rescued over 9500 people.

The crowd of over 1000 people stranded on the freeway overpass has been Medevac'd out!

What a TREMENDOUS JOB BY OUR MILITARY!!!

The corner has been turned, FOLKS!

Praise the Lord! Thank you to our Military! Our local Tennessee National Guard has been making runs all day, shipping in supplies and bringing evacuees back to Nashville. Our Governor has said we will be taking in at least 30,000 evacuees. We already have a number here -people who fled and came here to be with friends and relatives before the storm hit.

I never had any doubts about the job our military could and would do once they got the green light from the powers that be! What a wonderful job they are doing.

The military has been doing a superb job!!

After being in charge of the evacuation for only 24 hours they go most of the people in most locations food and water, and have gotten most of them move out of the city to get medical attention and to one of the safe shelter locations.

This shows that the problem to begin with was with the Mayor and Governor of LA not getting the plans in place to do this last week after the storm had passed and the flooding first began.

Yes, that and the head of FEMA. You'll notice who is helping him now - on-the-job training???

At any rate (I find this incredulous myself), it was just announced on cable news that TOMORROW the Governor of LA is going for the first time to tour the areas of devastation. Wouldn't one think she would have wanted to tour this a little bit sooner than NOW, or am I just being prissy?

But they were quick to blame others for the problem.

The breach in the 17th Street Canal levee that had put the city of New Orleans underwater was essentially closed early Sunday evening after days of work.

MORE GOOD NEWS!

It was reported on cable news that 29,000 people have left the shelters to go live with relatives, friends, and those who have opened their homes. Also, people are being reunited with other family members and with their family pets.

I love how Americans, despite the threads of differences that run through our individual beliefs, still pull together and help each other out in these times of need.

I was at Red Cross Headquarters this weekend, and I asked, point blank, "Given the Red Cross' belief that you must prepare in advance for disasters, why wasn't there food and water at the Superdome?"
Answer - No one asked us to help, and we didn't know they planned to put people there until it was too late to mobilize that chapter.

There is a reason that they earned the nickname "Big Easy." They worry and plan less than they should.

I heard on one of the news channels that they expected to be there 18-24 hours. They didn't take into their planning action that the levee would be breached.

Still, you would expect there would be a need for water at the very least.

How could New Orleans not take the levee break into consideration? I understand federal politicans who probably never even though of the levee beyond, "We can save money if we don't pay to fix it," but in New Orleans those levees were in the front pages of the paper almost every week.
