I am what I Eat

Eggs are good for you. Eggs are bad for you.
Oatmeal is good for you. Oatmeal is bad for you.
Wine is good for you. Wine is bad for you.

We are what we eat. Re-gene ing our bodies happens daily, as new cells replace the old. And obviously, without the right building blocks, those new cells cannot be as strong and healthy as those they replaced.

So what do we eat? Take that head of brocolli I just had for supper:

We use hybrid seeds, genetically engineered and mutated
We use depleted soils enhanced with chemical fertilizers
We use poluted water to irrigate it
We use chemical pesticides and insecticides
We have poluted air from smog and vehicle exhaust
We harvest it before it is ripe
We radiate/gas it to give it longer shelf life
We color it, spraying/injecting it with more chemicals
We wax it to retain shape and color
We ship it all over the nation, taking days by truck
We stock it in our warehouses
We ship it further to our stores
We buy it and put it in the fridge or the cupboard for a week
We cook it to death or nuke any cellular nurtrition out of it
We cover it with fats and oil, cheeses or sauce
We serve it to our kids and maybe a little gets eaten
We wash it down with Coke laced with sugar or aspertame

And we pat ourselves on the back for eating right

No wonder we are a nation of sick and obese people, who health is DE-gene-erating more rapidly in every gene-eration.

Shouldn't Christians be speaking out about an abuse of our bodies that is far worse than smoking and that will make AIDS deaths pale in comparison?

Dr. Bob,

Your sermon was real good - till you got to the following line:
We cover it with fats and oil, cheeses or sauce
That is where you quit preaching and commenced to meddling!!!

Dan - covered in cheese sauce!!

PS - good thing your better half is a doctor - maybe she can cure you (of you meddling)!

We are NOT getting proper nutrition. Nor are we digesting what we do get. And most are so toxic that it is like putting good stuff down a plugged up toilet.

Just reminding-poking-prodding to get out of the sedentary lifestyle and watch what we are eating.

If VEGGIES (which I described) are like this, then what about the fast food on which we live?

By weight, Americans eat more potatoes than all other vegetables combined. And more than 70% of our potato consumption is in french fries or chips.

I think you overstate your case. There are many myths out there about food and diet. One of the myths is that there are dangerous pesticide residues in the foods we eat and perhaps other residues as well. I don't believe it. The poison is in the dose, something that most people have not heard and do not understand. Although there are some good things advocated by the organic and natural food movement, there is lots of misinformation too. I don't believe that the advantages of "natural" foods are sufficient that such foods are worth the premium price. I believe that almost all foods bought in ordinary food stores are safe. Sure it is better to eat some foods rather than others, but fresh foods are not necessarily any better than frozen, and "organic" foods are not necessarily any better than foods grown in more conventional ways. You think differently? What is your evidence?

I have no problem with any of the above except for polluted water. For example, what is the difference between a molecule of fertilizer derived from chemicals and the same sort of molecule derived from organic material? In fact there is no difference. A molecule containing a nitrate is the same regardless of the source. There is some scare value in using the word "chemical" though. A certain portion of the public automatically thinks that "chemical" is bad and "natural" is good. It ain't necessarily so, but it is a result of a poorly educated public.

What is wrong with "chemical pesticides'? You saying it is wrong does not make it so. Whether water pollution is important in growing crops depends on the kind of pollution. You saying it is a problem does not make it a problem. Incidentally, there are government agencies involved in making sure the food supply is safe. I think they do a good job. Do you have evidence that they do not? Would your evidence convince a jury?

That's your problem right there.

Why were you eating Brocolli in the first place!!!

Surely God is warning mankind against it with it's terrible taste.

Kids refuse to eat it and as Jesus says in Matthew 18v3
"And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven."

I'd avoid brocolli for the good of your soul if I were you.

Bro Bob, may you could add another topic in the forums for help in nutritional eating and recommend diets. Maybe you and your wife could moderate it.

Kids don't eat broccoli because Mom and Dad made faces and don't tell them it's good! My kids eat asparagus, broccoli, brussel sprouts, okra, spinach, collard greens, turnip greens, cauliflower, squash of all types, liver (Now, don't freak out Dr. Bob! Only once a month) I don't FRY foods! We don't use sauces or gravies except on Thanksgiving. I make my own bread and use virgin olive oil when it's needed.

I buy my veggies at a local produce market owned by a family who drives to the Farmer's Market in Fla. three days a week. My 'food' is not waxed, packaged or even old!

Now.... we don't use boxed foods and virtually NEVER eat McDonald's etc. (We're all well within or under the guide lines for weight, too!) OH, and we all take vitamins every day. I take a natural estrogen supplement.

DIET is a 4 letter word! There is no need to struggle when all you really need to do is keep your caloric intake within reason by eating only healthy foods which means mostly VEGETABLES!

But I do agree with eating the right foods, in the right quantities. I do most of my cooking in an iron wok,,cook fast in a hot pan and raw vegetables as much as possible.

I think a doctor wrote a book about it is not what's eat you, but what you are eating..some 40 years ago.

Cheers,

Jim

To expand a little on what Tanker said with some research.

In college, I came across a paper by Dr. Bruce Ames, the developer of the Ames test to determine if something is a mutagen. What Dr. Ames has done is to go through and test many different manmade pesticides to determine if they are carcinogenic. He then went through and did the same tests on the natural chemicals that plants use to protect themselves. What was found was that both classes of chemicals were carcinogenic at about the same rate. Roughly 50% of each kind of chemical was found to be carcinogenic.

Now, the key point is that you ingest about 10,000 times as much natural pesticides as you do manmade pesticides by weight. Some things you eat can be as much as 10% by weight pesticides where you generally only have micrograms of manmade pesticides on your food. Despite this, you are much healthier and live longer on a diet high in fruits and vegetables. So the effect of a small additional amount of pesticides is not likely to be hazardous. There is even the possibility that foods grown without pesticides could be more harmful because of potential higher levels of pests, such as molds, that could release additional chemicals into the food.

You can Google on Ames and other keywords to get more info. Several of his papers are out there and make interesting reading, though you may not really want to know what chemicals are naturally in your food.

Until I go overboard. Tonight at work there will be a whole, cored pinapple that will go down in one sitting as a snack. I guess that is still a good bit better than the equivalent volume of Reece's Cups.

Once I would have laughed at this thread. Now I am not laughing. About three weeks ago I was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I had been feeling bad for sometime and suddenly I was in so much pain that I made two trips to the emergency room in eight days. I thought I was dying, literally. Since that time I have been forced to look at my diet and make some healthy choices. I use to say that I would not give up my diet of meat, cheese and fried foods. Now, I will do anything in order not to experience the pain I had again.

Terry,

I am sorry to hear of your condition. I pray that the change of diet will control your symptoms and the pain you have been suffering.

PINEAPPLE, RAW 1 CUP, 1 gram of fat, 75 calories

Sounds like a great snack to me!

Terry, sorry to hear of your condition. I guess that's much more common than we ever knew. Praying for relief!

Thankful

Terry, my grandson, may have IBS. Please let us know about any treatments or meds that your doctor prescribes and how you do. This is a very frustrating syndrome.

At present, the doctor thinks grandson has a reoccuring virus, but not sure.

We pray for your recovery.

Thankful:

What I have done is stop eating most dairy products. Previous to this I drank over one gallon of milk a week by myself. Now I drink no more than a quart, and it is now 2% instead of whole milk. I do not eat very much cheese at all, although I do use some butter. I eat mostly chicken and fish, very little red meat at all. I drink plenty of water and take fiber or drink prune juice daily. I eat more vegetables and fruit than I have ever eaten in my entire life. I am a diabetic who used to use 100 units of insulin daily, but now, since I have lost about 10 pounds I do not require any insulin at all. Even before I lost most of the weight I was down to 30 units daily because of my diet. Oh yeah, I used to eat a LOT of ice cream. Since this condition, I have not eaten any at all.

I have learned that each person must, by trial and error, learn what they can eat and how much they can eat. One of the most beneficial things I have done is to not eat nearly as much food for each meal and to have three meals a day instead of one or two, as in the past.

I want to thank all of the kind word expressed in my behalf. This condition has been the best blessing I have had in years. I had been living a backslidden life for several years and was eaten up with anger and bitterness. God has used this and allowed me, in His wonderful grace, to turn my heart back to Him. I had totally forgotten how wonderful it is to love and serve Him. I just praise Him that He has granted repentance to me! I certainly did not do anything to deserve it; He is just a forgiving God. Praise His name!
