You fail to understand what James is saying in regard to the oil. Perhaps if you understood God's covenants, you would understand James speaking about the oil.
Instead, you mock God and his word. (Be thankful God is gracious.)
Anointing nowadays is done by the HOLY SPIRIT. Back in the day, they used prayer cloths as well. How many phony teleministers offer "prayer cloths" for a "love offering"? It goes right along with the RCC's "holy water"
And the church that does the MOST anointing with oil is the RCC, the same church that practices mariolatry & has man-made saints.
Again, you fail to understand the covenants. When James wrote, the church...and the Holy Spirit were already at work.
Second, I couldn't care less about teleministers. I care about God's word. Address the text please.
As I said, if YOUR conscience tells you to anoint, go ahead. Mine does NOT, so I don't. It's mostly a Catholic practice. Yes, I know it's in Scripture, but so is it for women to not come to church with braided hair, etc.

There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band, A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God always.” - Acts 10:1-2
The key here was that Cornelius was a good man and saved.

It's not about conscience. It is about what God tells us.
What gives you the arrogance to tell God he was just speaking culturally? This isn't conscience. This is you openly stating that you think God's word is hokum. Nothing in this passage is cultural.
I do agree that your conscience is seared regarding this passage. Go ahead and tell God to screw himself and that you refuse to call elders to pray over your illness and anoint you with oil. You have to answer to God, just like me. Be very thankful for God's grace.
I trust the HOLY SPIRIT to both heal Himself & to guide human caregivers. Sometimes He causes one to be healed or cured; sometimes He doesn't, no matter what. If your snake oil worked, there'd be no health care facilities nor caregivers. Feel free to take up serpents if you choose.

roby, we are discussing scripture. Don't tell me about what you do or that you trust the Holy Spirit, when you toss out the written message of the Holy Spirit as being worthless.

Scripture also says to not wear clothes made of 2 or more fabrics, & to stone adulterers. Do you do either?
Do you have zero clue about covenants God has made and why the Mosaic/Sinai Covenant no longer applies to the person under the New Covenant?
roby, you have taken the position that it is you, yourself, who gets to tell God what parts of scripture are relevant to you and what you will reject.
When God tells us that a covenant has been fulfilled and we no longer live under that covenant, we are therefore not bound under it.
Has God told us that James words are no longer to be recognized and followed?
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. I have some knowledge of medicine, being a former corpsman. If I become too ill for OTC meds, I'm gonna see a dr. I've seen the results of "faith healers", & their record isn't very good. Sure, God can heal or cure anytting, but He helps those who help themselves. As I've said several times, you may do as you choose.
At times, you remind me of the snake-handlers, whose world HQ is in Jolo, WV. about 35 miles from my home. Or, of the parents who let their child die of leukemis because they depended upon "faith healing".

You can do whatever you wish. I also note that you are choosing to avoid scripture. You can do that as well.
What you must acknowledge is that you have determined that you get to tell God what you accept and what you reject in His word.
That is between you and God. It is not a matter of conscience. It is a matter of rejection or acceptance. It is clear you reject what God tells you.

And why such an ado ? NO Christian should ever present a false doctrine except to call it false & criticize it.
Do you have a wife? Do you have parents living? Do you have a child/children? What if any of them become seriously ill? Are you gonna pour California Olive Ranch oil on him/her, or get'em to a dr?
Such as answer is to be expected with one with both feet in the Sardisean congregation!
